The Ark of the Covenant is in Ethiopian Orthodox Church????

If they do have it, Islam would not be happy would they?

Wouldn’t they say the ark was made up by Christianity?

I had heard that their tradition hold he was converted to Christ and lived a Christian life, much like his wife did.

They must have had it a very long time. Honoring it and safe guarding it down thru the ages. Leave it alone, why should other people start clamoring for them to share it with them. Go there on a pigrimage. Spend your money in their country and help them out and venerate the ark, if it is truly there.

Its the if that bothers me.
Christians should know for sure, but they are not infalible…so the bishop of Rome would have to confirm this.

I’m sure they aren’t lying. But that doesn’t necessarily mean they are correct.

I think you need to read Vatican I a little more carefully. It never said “The Pope is infallible whenever he says ‘The Ark of the Covenant is in such-and-such place.’”

Such as what? That Rome isn’t the only one that canonizes people? Or that the Ethopian Orthodox Church doesn’t believe in Sola Scriptura?

If this is true, shouldn’t The Ark be shared with the other churches?
Why would one church keep such a huge relic all to themselves?

Is it really the original Ark of the Covenant?? I thought it was missing after the fall of Jerusalem to the Syrian empire during the first Israelite exile.

The way I see it, three possibilties come to my mind. (I love #3)
1.) It is the actual Arc… AWESOME!

2.) They know it isn’t and are lying about it. Which, as you have stated is indeed a sin as is every lie of this nature. Lying certainly isn’t unheard of. Even in our beautiful Catholic Church, lies and fraud occur.

3.) They believe what they say (so it is not a lie) but they are wrong in their belief.

We do not need one of our Bishops to go there and give us a difinitive answer as to the true identity of the Arc because guite frankly no definetive answer can be given. The Church is not infallible in these matters. I would actually be surprised if some Vatican officials have not already been there to see what the ARC actually is. We have no way of konwing and possibly never will.

According to Eusibius and other historical accounts I thought he fell on his sword in Austria in disgrace.

Correct. He is said by Eusebius (Church History II.7), on the authority of earlier writers, whom he does not name, to have fallen into great misfortunes under Caligula, and eventually to have committed suicide.

Also, a correction: It’s the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, not the Ethopian Orthodox Church, that venerates Pontius Pilate. My apologies for the error.
 
Um…a correction to your corretion: the Ethiopian Orthodox Church is the EOTC. Tewahedo is a Ge’ez word (Ge’ez is the language of their liturgy) meaning “made one”, “unified”, etc. It is a cognate with the Arabic “tawhid”. The Ethiopian Orthodox use this word to show their belief in the unification of the two natures of Christ, as opposed to the belief of the Eastern Orthodox and Catholics in the hypostatic union that says the two natures of Christ are unmixed.

The Ethiopians are Oriental Orthodox, not Eastern Orthodox. To my knowledge, there is no Ethiopian Eastern Orthodox Church (if you type “Ethiopian Orthodox Church” into Wiki, it redirects you to the Tewahedo page :)), though I do know Ethiopians and Eritreans who worship in a Eastern Orthodox Church back home in California, presumably because there is no Oriental Church in the area.

Either way why canonize a man who committed suiside? It sounds like he had no hope apart from his honor.

You wouldn’t be allowed anywhere near it. There is a priest (or is he just a monk?) who spends his whole life within the grounds of the small chapel which supposedly houses the ark, guarding it- no one else is allowed to see the ark to my knowledge.
