Must you be in a State of Grace to recieve ashes on ash wednesday? 🙂
 
No.

One does not even have to be Catholic - or a Christian for that matter.
 
Receiving ashes is not a Sacrament of the Church. It is a sacramental - a physical sign of, in this case, our sinfulness. Anyone can receive ashes - I dated a Protestant who always enjoyed going to Ash Wednesday with me and receiving ashes.

:confused: I don’t know. I wouldn’t think so, but you should always try to be in a state of grace.
You can make an appointment with the priest for an emergency confession. Don’t be afraid to 🙂

Does the maroon-colored dragon, who answers to the name of Eric, approve of self-gratification ?

Are there febrile ululations that can be uttered here that will perhaps tempt the posters to murmur, sotto voce: " What, by Jove, is this fellow on about ?. What exactly does he mean with ‘State of Grace’ ? Does that actually mean anything or is it just so much white noise emanating from a disordered mind, mired in iron-age mumbo-jumbo ? Is that really how one is supposed to spell ‘receive’ ? "

no it is a pentitential act so the logical people to participate would be sinners–like all of us. It is not a sacrament, but a sacramental. While we are waiting for the opportunity for confession we can use sacramentals to help us, like ashes, the rosary, medals etc.
 
So Someone in Mortal Sin can still Recieve the Ashes?

and (this is adifferent question) Is Ash Wednesday, or Good Friday, Holy Saturday, or Easter a Holy Day of Obligation? Are there any Holy Days of Obligation within The Holy Season of Lent?

Yes, a monkey worshipping pagan who is living with 3 women and robbing banks can receive ashes 🙂

HDO - Easter, either attend the Easter Vigil on Sat PM or Sunday Mass.

Ash Wed and Good Friday are not HDOs.

Yes, someone in Mortal Sing can receive the ashes on Ash Wednesday.

Ash Wednesday, Holy Thursday, and Good Friday are not Holy Days of Obligation, and neither is Holy Saturday. Yet, attendance is encouraged for these important days.

The Easter Vigil Mass is usually celebrated at or past sunset on Holy Saturday evening, so that begins the obligation to attend an Easter Mass (Sunday obligation). If you were to attend the Easter Vigil Mass, your obligation to attend Sunday Mass is fulfilled.

There are no Holy Day’s of Obligation during the season of Lent, although there are important Feasts and Solemnities that need to be honored, such as the Annunciation and Saint Joseph’s Day.

Memorials are observed as optional memorials during Lent. But of course, there are also good models of almsgiving and zealous devotion through these saints, such as Saint Casimir, Saint Cyril of Jerusalem, Saint Catherine Drexel, and Saint Francis of Rome.

and how is one to behave during Feasts and Solemnities. There is no obligation to go to The Mass, I am assuming? But should we avoid work etc? Things that would be done on HDO’s and on The Lord’s Day?

(of course on Ash Weds…one needs to fast and abstain…)

(and the Fridays of Lent which are not solemnities…or Holy Days of Obligation…one must abstain from meat…)

Beginning on Holy Thursday, we should enter a period of solemn observance.

You do not go to a party, to a bar, you don’t dance and celebrate - you are in the garden and with Christ at Calvary - if you can avoid work do, I always take a personal day on Good Friday.

I always try to take off work from Thursday through Monday so we can go to Mass every day during the Holy Days and observe properly. I know this is not an option for everyone, but I prefer to use my vacation days this way every year, even if it means I end up short to take a vacation elsewhere in the year. But with four weeks paid vacation it’s not usually difficult, and I am so busy with work anyway it’s hard to take what I do get sometimes.

Last year I forgot to take Holy Thursday off and I hated working on that day and then rushing around to get to Mass in the evening after feeding friends here at the house (and still have time to fast for on hour before Mass!). We always have lamb on Holy Thursday so I was trying to work a half day and get dinner pulled together at the same time - not recommended. This year I took all the days off so I am not trying to balance work with prayer/Mass/solitude.
