I used to be a Baptist, but I never heard of Smyth either. I was an American Baptist. We were taught about Roger Williams and the Rhode Island, founded because the Puritans ran him out of Massachusetts.I’m a sister, lol
I don’t mind not knowing about Smyth, because he is not the reason I go to church and he means nothing about what I learn and how we worship. We study the Bible, sing Christian hymns and contemporary songs, have communion, tithe, and have a sermon based on and containing scripture. He may have started the Baptist denomination, but we don’t study about him or hold him in regard or anything… he’s just a man to me. That’s all. I doubt he’d even recognize the Baptist church if he could see it today as I am sure it’s quite different.
