The average boy in the US has played about 10,000 hours of video games, and watches 50 porn video clips per week, by the age of 18, according to the latest data. The average parent has no idea of the magnitude of the problem

These are “arousal addictions”, meaning that it is not just more of the same, but increasing stimulation and variety, which is required to keep the interest going. The porn industry is one of the fastest growing, for the 400 mainstream movies coming out per year, there are now 11,000 porn vids… most of which can be streamed on the internet.

The “average” boy, is also 30% more likely than the average girl to drop out of school, and is five times as likely to be labeled with ADHD.

In self assessment profiles of entering college freshmen, the average males are declining steadily each year in social skills, and describe themselves as being shy, or having social anxiety.

The average boy is in big trouble. There does not seem to be much attention being paid to the problem.

I am curious as to whether the CC is doing anything specifically to target male youth?

Don’t believe everything you read. The “average boy” isn’t in the trouble the media would like you to think he is.

Having said that, there are serious problems that address boys. The media should focus on them.

It’s believable. I don’t do that (look at porn), but I do play video games on the weekends.

I think the average CAF member would be amazed at how much an average teenager plays COD. so, although I think the video game hours is a stretch, kids do play them A TON!

Of cours boys are more likely to be ADHD! Its a brain misfiring and a problem of synapse connection. Men’s brains have a much wider gap between hemispheres…making it harder on those bridges

I don’t know about you guys but I for one, am going to log hundreds of hours into Skyrim when it comes out on 11.11.11 Just built a new gaming rig so I can max it. Can’t wait to see what the modding community can do with it. I’m STOKED!

In all the discussion of females rights issues boys and men have gotten lost in the cracks. A lot of people lump us all together as some privileged monolithic entity… we’re not. Health issues, family courts, divorce, domestic violence (and yes, I mean against men,) abortion, pop culture, and even some of the prevailing norms in the Church are eviscerating us.

At least I’m sure that the average boy didn’t watch 10,000 hours of video games in the days before video games (or TV) were invented. Has their attention span dropped as a result of playing video games?

Statistics are from a talk by Philip Zimbardo. Famous for the Stanford Prison Experiment.

Triple major as an undergrad in: psychology, sociology and anthropology. M.A. and Ph.D. in Psychology from Yale University. Taught at Columbia before moving to Stanford. I have not checked his numbers, but considering the his reputation for scholarship, and the discernment of his particular audience, they are probably solid.

Multitasking has been studied, using the best and brightest honors students at top schools. It turns out that people who multitask… game, to PDA, to homework, etc… don’t do anything as well as if they focus on one task at a time. There was some speculation that kids are becoming multi-taskers, unlike their parents. So far, the empirical evidence is that they are not.

10,000 hours? I probably didn’t put that in until after my 18th birthday and I started gaming at the ripe age of six

Are you ready to cover fields in dragon blood? 👋

As a gamer, I’ve seen my share of both irresponsible and responsible gaming.

Let me tell you, responsible gaming still plays plenty and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. As to the whole lack of ‘social interaction’, that would depend on one’s definition of said terms. I hang out with a lot of gamers both online and offline. 🤷

P.S.

I’m also interested as to how this study calculated up to the 10,000 hours. For me, I usually play about 4-6 hours a day but that time is pretty much cut up with breaks, chores, and studies in between.

I don’t know, but I doubt very much anyone ever spent 14 hours hunched over a glowing TV screen, as I did once during my second playthrough of Xenosaga, before video games. So…shortened attention spans? Meh, it’d depend on the game.

And then there was the time I racked up, oh, 50 respawns (i.e. got killed and had to start again from the save point), in one hallway, the first time I played Halo 3 on Legendary. And that wasn’t even the infamous level “Cortana” (ask anyone, that’s the worst level in the entire franchise).
