The awesome power that lies in reading the Bible

When I was in the 7th grade the catholic school I attended informed my father that I would not be allowed to return the next year, and he should take the Bible away from me. It seems my questions in Catechism Class were upsetting the Nun’s. (gee, I just wanted to know where the scripture was so I could read it more?)

When I read the CCC I look up all the bible references.

Gosh, some of the priests can give you misinformation, beware.

And I’m pretty sure she knows these off by heart. Whenever she was seeking wisdom from God she would open her Bible and read and read until she found something that spoke to her.
I think a lot of Catholics fear getting into reading the Bible for fear they may be challenged and possibly because it is not pushed much to read it.
I have made the decision to become a Bible reading Catholic. Imagine having the knowledge and zeal for the Bible Protestants have coupled with the truth of the Church and the power in the Sacraments. Also I think some Catholics rely heavily on certain prayerful devotions and stick to that only. Imagine if you combined it all together, what power and strength you would have in God!

Wow … have nailed it with above statements !!

St. Paul knew the scriptures by heart, and this is why his knowledge of God and insights led to his selection by Christ to be so influential in writing NT scripture & starting so many Churches thruout the Roman Empire.

Yes, true enuf…

but, as a former protestant, the same can be said for many of them. There will always be sheep and goats in the Church(es).

History doesn’t lie …all Protestant roots reside in Catholicism. Way back in the beginning, Catholics were on fire for the Gospel & loved the scriptures. Somewhere that got lost. But, with PROTESTANT witnesses like yourself…we can hopefully regain our thirst for the covenant scriptures.

Right now, I sure don’t see our Priests encouraging Bible reading. Its gonna take the laity to motivate them.
 
I do remember my New Testament teacher, a Franciscan Priest, saying we should read the Bible everyday.🙂
 
I heard something about how for some time the Church didn’t allow anyone to read the Bible and people didn’t have access to Bibles. The Church was in fear that people would interpret it themselves. Is this true ??

If so, the Reformers’ errors certainly proved that sentiment to be true!

No. Bible’s were scarce. All had to be written by hand. No printing presses, etc. No access because they were expensive. Besides, many could not read them. As soon as they could be produced cost effectively most families bought one.

I was led to believe that the Church didn’t want people reading the Bible and allegedly even killed people over it. A Pentecostal woman said this to me
 
I just spoke to the Priest from my local Church. He said the Church didn’t discourage people reading the Bible , the fact is many people didn’t know how to read. He said yes there were battles from both sides at that time that resulted in death but to say Catholics killed people for wanting to read the Bible is ridiculous, and he said the woman who told me that needs to get past all of that. I kind of felt when she said it to me it might be one of those myths that circulate in the Protestant Churches. It’s sad how people will make up rubbish to try to appear like the better person. 😦
Ps- the Priest said to me keep reading the Bible!!👍
