Eternal rest grant unto Him oh LORD, let THY perpetual light shine upon Him. May his soul and all the souls of the Faithful departed, through the mercy of GOD, rest in peace. Amen.

Apparently raised Catholic and an altar boy at one time according to the above.

He did defend the Church at times … or took exception to perceived anti-Catholicism.

I liked their show Siskel-Ebert - it did call attention to the current movies back in the day.

There might be a show like this again. In a way this is what the Legion of Decency was lacking back in the 1960s when it lost its power. The rating system wasn’t enough.

Having critics and advocates for films with a personal angle would have helped the Legion.

What an uncharitable comment to make so soon after his death.

RIP Roger, you will be missed.
Ebert was a good critic, who wrote with a great deal of wit and verve. I don’t think he can be dismissed in a two-word sound bite that easily, and I pray for the repose of his soul. 🙂

I thought his review of the awful “Caligula” was pretty funny. I don’t know much about the man, though, and I don’t watch a lot of films. Sad to hear it, though.

"I consider myself Catholic, lock, stock and barrel, with this technical loophole: I cannot believe in God…"

This was from a very recent journal of his.

He was an atheist and not an agnostic, buddhist, humanist, or any other made up entity. He is from a different kind of atheism. He is preaching a kind that considers religion purely ritualistic and faith solely ridiculous.

Reminds me of people who don’t want to say they are atheist all the way, just in case there is a God.

Check this out, punisherthunder. Earlier in this thread, I should’ve said something like, “He was at least agnostic.”

You might want to check this out, OxygenMan.

BTW, Roger Ebert once replied to one of my Facebook posts.
