I think a good addition to your series should be a thread about the epistemological differences between science and metaphysics, and why they are both valid inferential systems and do not contradict each-other.
Excellent recommendation! That’s the thread that will get us down to business.

Keep true to the objectives of this first series 101 we should cover some more preliminary material. I will let you know when it can be fit in properly. Take a look at the aim for this series on the first post here:
forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=611279 We are running a little behind schedule due to technical problems. Let me know what you think and when we can fit it in. Again, I am thinking that we can cover some more general material before getting into a heavy duty discussion where we may lose people.

confused

Not that I think we necessarily will, but, it would be more pleasant for some to experience the discussion with a better background. We will get there before you know it, you will see.
MindOverMatter2;8536982The idea that science is the only rational mode of inferential knowledge (*scientism

) is an issue i spend most of my time challenging, and so a thread discussing the epistemological nature of metaphysics as expressed by Aquinas/Aristotle and in relation to science would would be quite cool.
Btw, I think that you may appreciate what Professor Michael Dummett is arguing there. He is exactly responding to scientism and defending philosophy. It happens that in England they are planning to cut back funding research that is not useful (scientism) and philosophy is one of those things they consider to be pointless and as their beloved child (Hawking) has put it - dead. Professor Dummett is really responding to this threat to the philosophy departments of England and it’s origin - scientism. It is not clear to me what role Quine has played, I am not familiar with him but his name keeps coming up as a promoter of the idea that metaphysics can be done with science as its basis and it will be a better metaphysics. Not sure if I can put that in his mouth, but, that is what I have been picking up. I will try to get familiar with Quine. But, I digress…
A thread on epistemology (what can we know?) would also be good.
Yes, that one for sure.

I am going to post your recommendation on the thread we are using as a base for the series where we share general information, recommendations, etc…

We will do all that MindOverMatter2, thank you for the recommendations.
Now, back to our topic. I want to post Aristotles thoughts about philosophy and type up the definition not given in the Cambridge Dictionary of Philosophy and post it here. I say not given, because the editor refused to provide a simple definition and he gives his reasons in the introduction which I think is quite appropriate. I will be back to post it.
What is philosophy? That is the question. And, of course, how is it done, that is, how do people ‘philosophize’?
I’m off to Mass…will be back soon…
P.s. I apologize for the sloppiness of my previous post. I was typing fast as I kept losing connection. I hope you can figure out what I was trying to say.
