Director Mark Thompson Defends Its “Rounded” Approach

ROME, FEB. 11, 2010 (Zenit.org).- The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is not known to be one of the Catholic Church’s closest friends.

Although it has a worldwide reputation for high quality programming, the vast state-funded broadcaster has often been accused of treating the Church and the Catholic faith unfairly at best, and maliciously at worst.

Many examples back up this accusation, beginning with a number programmes over the past 10 years that have been blasphemous and highly offensive to Catholics.

Thank goodness someone has finally said it aloud, I find it so frustrating that there is alway a descenting voice and never the voice of truth on that channle…and sickens me because we have to pay for that rubbish.…and

I stopped expecting secular news sources to accurately report on religious matters quite a while ago.

But, in my humble opinion, the BBC is still the world’s best news broadcaster when dealing with non-religious stories. For news outside of North America they are completely unmatched. When there were riots in Iran all you could see on all the American “news” channels was 24/7 coverage of Michael Jackson (and Nancy Grace probably still covering the Caylee Anthony story), but I remember the BBC reporting on the riots.

It’s funny, because I was listening to BBC World on the radio the day the Pope released Caritas in Veritate and I thought they did a fair job covering it. It wouldn’t surprise me if they were unfair in reporting religious matters though. Like I said, I don’t get my religious news from the secular press. I still think they’re the best in non-religious news. At the very least they offer a non-American point of view, which is refreshing.

I pretty much agree with your assessment. They’re great at pretty much any other types of news. But ever since the little “investigative report” they put out maybe 8 years ago on Crimen Sollicitationis, I never trusted a word they had to say about anything religious. I have to say I did not know some of the other allegations in that article, however.
