Well, it looks like there will be a chance to do some changes. Holy Name Cathedral burned this morning.

Very serious damage, including a lot of water damage. Apparently, it could have been a lot worse, except that a worker showed up early to work and noticed the fire. Maybe his angel got him out of bed early!

It was interesting to see what tv stations said. Although a lot of the newspeople are obviously non-Catholic, it was nice to hear a reporter on one station chime in that Fr. So-and-so at the cathedral would often welcome people by asking who was from out-of-town, etc. She said it as though she experienced this first-hand on a regular basis, like a regular church attendee. It kind of struck me as nice.

God bless,
Dan

This is a wonderful thread! I’m in awe of the beauty that is present in so many of our places of worship and at the workmanship that has gone into building them. And when I think of the prayers offered within the walls of these churches and the generous offerings that so many faithful have given to build them, well . . . I’m seldom speechless, but what else is there to say?

I have to say that I have been LOVING this thread. These churches are absolutely, stunningly beautiful!!!

My cousin has bullet holes in her kitchen window frame. When I visited Assumption Grotto, I asked a few people how far they drive. 45 minutes. An hour. One guy comes all the way from TOLEDO!
It goes to show you how much of an impact a good parish can do to people and the community.

St. Malachy’s in Philadelphia (I think I posted some pics on here) is one that is basically located in what people refer to as the “jungle”. I attended university not far from there which was safe and well-secured for the most part. The campus police was actually noted for being one of the best police forces in Philly. But off-campus during that time could be pretty scary, especially at night. I’d hear gun shots from my dorm window sometimes, have been caught between a gang chasing after a person with baseball bats who tried to escape them by running into our dorm, my brother was held up at gunpoint since he lived in an off-campus fraternity there, and we sadly had a couple students murdered off-campus too - one decided to go to an ATM off campus around midnight and the other unfortunately was caught in the crossfire while in the front of his church. It was a big eye-opener for a “country” kid like me and you learn to use your head, gain street smarts and be aware of things. I have, thankfully, never been accosted by anyone while I lived and studied there and volunteered in the community.

All that, and the parishioners of St. Malachy’s have been so supportive of the parish. They come from outside of the city, but they also have an African-American Catholic community within that part of the city.

Prayers for your cousin that she stays safe in her community.

Sorry…I couldn’t resist! :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Benedictgal…do you have any pics of the Metropolitan Cathedral in Mexico City (or as chilangos call it, “la De-efe.”)

Here is the Redemptoris Mater chapel, also housed at the Vatican:

This photo was taken during the rededication of the chapel. Pope John Paul II was the celebrant.

Of course, I could not resist putting a picture with Pope Benedict XVI in it.

Wieskirche: Pilgrimage Church of the Scourged Savior in Steingaden, Bavaria, Germany. I visited this church when I was on an exchange in high school.

Rome has so many beautiful churches but my favourite is the Chiesa del Gesu, the mother church of the Jesuits. The facade was designed by Giacomo della Porta and is the first truly post Reformation/Baroque facade.

The small chapels around the perimeter of the nave are incredible. Here are examples of two of them.

Of course, we can’t leave out this sacred gem, the Sistine Chapel:

This is certainly a vantage point we rarely see.
The Sistine Chapel is a fine example of art redeeming the errors of architecture. It’s a very clumsy space, taken in itself.

LOL. A little of the Gesu goes a very long way! You need Dramamine when you go in there! But I love it in a perverse sort of way.
