Yes, our cathedral and the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis are quite lovely. I shudder to think what would have been built in our own day instead of the 19th century. :o

Christine and Gary, thank you for sharing your pix, as well. Both are “sweet” without being too sweet, if you know what I mean. My own parish is a modern building with few elements to recommend it for beauty, sad to say. But, I’m enjoying all the pix of all the lovely churches. Thanks everyone!

I have seen the Basilica of St Mary from the outside, but have not been in it yet. Next time I take a trip out to Minnesota, I want to check it out. Our county (not to mention the whole world!) sure has some gorgeous churches, I think it would be great to tour the country and visit different Catholic churches. This thread is so enlightening and gratifying!

@ CHRISTINE77: I love St. Martin’s, too! In fact, that’s where I attend mass.

Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary Help of Christians at Holy Hill

holyhill.com/basilica-photos

More than 500,000 people from all over the world visit the Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Help of Christians, at Holy Hill each year. Some come to admire the beautiful architecture of the neo-Romanesque church built in 1926. Others make a pilgrimage to Holy Hill to worship, to meditate or to pray for healing. Regardless of what brings people to Holy Hill, they are bound to be touched by its peaceful environment and to be renewed in body, mind and spirit.

Holy Hill was declared a Shrine with “Portiuncula privilege” by Pope Leo XIII in 1903. And, as a result of the increasing number of pilgrims, the Discalced Carmelites of Bavaria were invited to staff the Shrine in 1906. On November 19, 2006, the Shrine was elevated to the status of Basilica.

We welcome you to come and visit Holy Hill’s 435 beautiful acres of peace and beauty. Whether it has been a while since you came, or you’ve never been here in person, there is no time like the present!

One of my favorites is the Cathedral of Siena (Italy). I’ve seen it in person and it is incredible.

No, I was in Chicago for business and attended Vespers.

It’s a fantastic church.
