I just read the article on Hawkings recent presentation and it brought up a question that I can say I have never actually thought of until just now, and would like to see what the answer is. He says in a sense that if God created the universe, what was He doing before the creation of the universe, creating hell for the people that ask that question? I am in every way a believer in my catholic faith and I want to be clear that this is not a debate on the existence of God, it is as straight forward as the Hawkings question. What was God doing before creating the universe and all that is in it? Thanks.

“Doing” is a concept which only has meaning in a temporal existence. God exists outside of time, he technically never “does” anything in the way we understand it. We really just can’t comprehend what happened “before” the creation of the universe.

That makes sense. Thanks!

Time is a measure of change.

God doesn’t change and so God is not subject to time.

The created universe however, does change, and so creation is subject to time.

Nothing changed before God created matter because only God existed and God does not change, and therefor there was no time.

“Doing” necissarily requires change. God was not “Doing” anything.

:hmmm: Isn’t it amazing that a seemingly brilliant mind can be so stumped by something so simple?
Time is 1 of the Dimensions of our Universe, God exists outside our universe therefore outside Time.
It may well be that the reason for him professing atheism is due to this perceived failure in grasping the nature of God.

It is the “If I cannot understand GOD therefore HE does NOT exist” sindrome.

Isn’t we trying to fully comprehend GOD akin to an amoeba trying to understand nuclear fusion?

:p:D

(insert hysterically laughing smilie here…)

Imagine a Here and a Now,
through which/in which/out of which all things come into being;
One thing emerges and fades and/or is transformed into another,
in endless procession, within That which never changes.
What exists before God’s Now? outside of His Here?
Creation: transience within Eternity.
It all exists within God’s infinite view.
