The belief in Aliens okay with the Vatican?

I watched a History Channel show where it stated that the Vatican said that belief in aliens is not contradictory to the belief in God. It program suggests that Jesus could have been an alien!? This is not the way I believe in God. I believe in God as being an all loving, omnipresent being and heaven being a paradise of total bliss not of this universe and not another planet. Can someone clear this up for me?:confused:

You can believe in aliens if you want.

On the issue of whether Jesus was an alien, the Church would reply in the negative.
 
If I were you, don’t listen to anything the History Channel says about the Catholic Church. If you do, make sure you research it fully before you come to any conclusions.

That said, I don’t think it’s a sin or bad in any way to believe in aliens. Unless, as the poster above said, you think Jesus was one. 😦
 
The History Channel has aired many things I would say are not “History” and there have been times their “History” has been off. Take em’ with a grain of salt.

I don’t believe it for one second. What I want to know is the Vatican stance on aliens. I don’t believe in them but I do recall something about the Vatican stating there was no contradiction in the belief in aliens and God. I was wondering if someone could clear that up or point me to an official link. The only aliens I believe in are those that come from other countries.🙂 The program was about ancient aliens and it is all new age type stuff.
 
I think the Church’s stance on ET’s is simple - if there are other worlds with intelligent life on them made in the image and likeness of God, then the One God created them all and they all require salvation just as we do.

I personally think it is very possible. God is infinite and so probably is His creation. Science is producing more and more evidence of an infinite number of universes. If there are multiple universes, then the One God created them all. Anything the mind of God can imagine (and that’s everything) probably exists somewhere. I’d like to meet people from other worlds and discuss religion with them. 👍

How is that? You’re assuming that each different race would start out as “fallen” before they had any choice in the matter.

No, they wouldn’t start out fallen any more that Adam and Eve did, but they would be sure to fall just as Adam and Eve did. I doubt that any race given free will would choose to be perfectly aligned with God’s will at all times.
 
As far as what’s “okay with the Vatican”, remember the words of St. Augustine:
In essentials, unity. In non-essentials, liberty. And in all things, charity.

I would say that the possibility of extra-terrestrial life is definitely a non-essential.
 
I saw this program and I thought it was very clear in saying that the pope understands that God could have created other beings in this vast universe. And if we believe that there is life on other planets,it doesn’t contradict the Bible in anyway or what we believe about God.
It is not a sin if you should decide or contemplate the idea that there is life on other planets besides our own.
That’s all. IT wasn’t saying that the pope believes there are little green men hovering over our planet. Nothing to get upset about at all.

There is no “official” Vatican stance on aliens. There are only individual Catholics (priests and astronomers [not that the two are mutually exclusive] and theologians and lay-people) with their own opinions.

You didn’t find the program suggesting that God was merely an alien that came from another planet? It seems to me the program stated that over and over. The guy that wrote “Chariots of Fire” was raised in the Church and still believes in God but his beliefs are wacked out because it seems he believes that god was from an alien race. He used many bible examples.

Colin Welland, the writer, was inspired by the biblical story of Elijah being taken to heaven in a chariot of fire. Someone might understandably interpret that story as a story of aliens from another planet taking Elijah up into a UFO.

I’ve heard stranger things.

Does the Vatican have to have an opinion about everything?

If there are “space aliens” they would be creatures of God, made by Him like everything else in the natural universe.

If you meet one, give him your Bible. 🙂

BTW, don’t use the Hysterical Channel, The Lying Channel or similar as a learning tool. The producers of those shows sometimes know less about their subject than you do. I have seen where the “interviewees” turn up in the credits as producer. In other words they sometimes interview themselves as authorities. Some of those characters are real squirrels and write sensational nonsense to sell books.

Have you noticed how many shows like that end their performance with questions? They often imply things that they do not have a shred of proof for, but are merely high speculation of the sensational variety.

Have you read the book Perelandra by C.S. Lewis, by any chance? I am not saying anything like the scenario in that book would be possible for sure, but sometimes I wonder…
 
The questions of aliens is in itself a scientific one.

While I don’t dismiss the possibility out of hand, I see no reason presently to say they definitely do exist.

As far as their spiritual needs, I leave it in God’s hands for now.

I have a hard enough time obeying His will for me. It’s a fool’s errand to determine what God wishes for races that may not even exist.
