The best First Communion song ever...

You know what? This is very sad… I just realized that I don’t remember any of the hymns from my First Holy Communion (mid 1980s). I think I still have the program at my parents’ house. (Strange child - at the age of 8, I thought it would be important to save these things to help me remember when I was an old lady. LOL!) And now that I’m an “old lady”, I’ll have to look for it when I go home.

I only know “Jesus, My Lord, My God, My All” because we sing it where I cantor now. I always get teary-eyed whenever we do sing it.
 
Beno, I agree with you - Precious Body, Precious Blood undermines the Holy Eucharist - should be sung in the Lutheran Church, but not the Church Jesus established - The Holy Catholic Church. Many of the new songs undermine the Blessed Sacrament by diminishing it to a “meal”. The figures of speech, though potentially cute in their plays on words, don’t do anything to give God the Adoration He deserves.

St. Augustine said, “When you sing, you pray twice” - as long as the song doesn’t undercut the teachings of the Church…

Sounds like the song is about a meal, not the Body and Blood of Christ.

One of our recent First Holy Communion classes used this hymn as their “theme” song.

Beautiful, sung by a group of 2nd and 3rd graders quite well, I may add.

Also, in honor of the Feast Day today, Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque penned a short hymn in honor of Our Lord’s Sacred Heart that goes like this:

“Most Sacred Heart of Jesus,
Truly Present in the Holy Eucharist,
I place all my trust in You”

This short hymn, along with a couple of others, was standard Communion Meditation at our school Masses all year long.

The children undoubtedly understand the Presence of Jesus in Holy Communion and hearing them sing these beautiful songs gives great joy to our hearts who witness their first encounter with Him in the Blessed Sacrament.

Can you tell me where to find sheet music or a recording of that song??

Also, I cannot find “Jesus, Jesus come to me” or “Soul of my Savior”
in any of my songbooks…
 
GIA has downloads for any of their songs- but do it through your parish. They want $9.995 a song.:eek: Check on iTunes. A lot of people make recordings of religious songs and upload them to iTunes. I got this really jazzy, piano version of “Gather Us In” for my husband on iTunes. He knows why.

I hope you mean that GIA charges $9.95 a song, not iTunes. I have always seen songs on iTunes going for $0.99.

Oh Lord, I Am Not Worthy

They are simple yet beautiful, great for a children’s Choir which I’m also partial to singing at First Communions 😉

Panis Angelicus is also beautiful.

I have the OCP accompaniment books, and access to “Gather” the GIA product as well.

I found ‘Soul of my Saviour’. in my songbook, I didn’t care for some of the archaic language…
I found a recording of ‘Jesus, Jesus come to Me’ on i-tunes.
I can figure out accompaniment for it, but sheet music would be nicer.

. If anyone can tell me who wrote “this is Jesus” from post # 25 I’d appreciate it.
It’s not on I-tunes…
 
I have two favorites for Communion Song
Oh Lord, I am not worthy - I remember this song from my own
First Communion.
I also love Panis Angelicus it has always been a favorite.

It has 12 Eucharistic songs, including (drumroll, please) “Jesus, My Lord, My God, My All”, “O Lord I Am Not Worthy”, “Adoro Te Devote” and “O Salutaris”. Each song is 99 cents, but the 12 can be had for $9.99.

I saw that and treated myself to the album, mostly because of all you guys recommending the songs many times. I figured it was worth a listen.

I’m still looking for a recording of “This is Jesus”…

I can’t remember all the other verses and if they are okay, or not. It’s a very easy song to learn and beautiful when the chidlren sing it. I just hope it’s not by one of the dreaded composers (you know who I mean), because I always liked it 😊 It used to be in one of the major music books (OCP or GIA?), though, so chances are good there are problems with it, lol (I have a lack of confidence in picking Catholic music anymore, lol)

Sr. Marianne Misetich, SNJM wrote that song in the 70s I believe. She also wrote “Holy Spirit” and “Comfort to my People”. Her music is incredibly simple and was found in OCP’s hymnals (although very little of it still is). Her music isn’t offensive theologically by any means, but it isn’t exactly thought-provoking either. However, probably good music choices for children. Sr. Marianne was organist at my parish on the Oregon Coast for a time. A nice lady.
