One word (or group of letters):
Y2K

I wonder if all those evangelists who were predicting the end of the world in 2000, and sold millions of books, dried foods, and generators, will ever give the money back to the people they conned?
Hmmmm…methinks not.
I remember I made a notation in my monthly planner at that time for Jan. 1st, 2000: “Y2K day: the world did not end”. 😃

hmmmm, i have only been a Catholic for 9 days, but from the comments on this thread, i think i will return my confirmation certificate to the church. now i know how Galileo felt. i remember when they believed the world was flat also.

Yes but Galeleo also believes the Sun was the center of the universe. If the Catholic church was to accept his ideas, they would have been wrong.

That’s a myth. Very few people in the Middle Ages believed the world was flat. Any people who lived near a large body of water knew better.
I also think you’re taking this thread a little more seriously than perhaps you should. Lighten up.

Bible code and 2012
Mayan calendar and 2012

add one more …

Around the walls of St Paul’s Outside the Walls in Rome they have mosaics of all the popes around the nave. Every pope is represented. When I was there JP II was pope and there was only room for 2 more mosaics. So, now there is only room for one more - clearly the next pope is the last.

Eh? How 'bout that? Sure sign of the end times.

the bible code does not really interest me. i think you could probably find in there whatever you wanted to find.
Agreed! That’s the real problem with these code systems - they can be made to say anything you want them to say.
i do find the mayan culture interesting. some of the shows on history channel, national geographic, discovery can be a little biased, but at the same time, they cover many interesting topics.
Me too. I think our understanding of Mayan culture is still in its infancy. Archeology is still a relatively new science and will discover a great deal more in the next 20 years or so.
we only have 3 1/2 years until december 21, 2012 to see if anything does happen. so far, this century has already been a calamity. i envy the earlier civilizations that were able to appreciate the heavens more than we are able today with our busy lives and bright lights of the cities. the island peoples used astronomy for navigation.
i find the connection between their sophistication of the heavens with their architecture very fascinating.
I doubt that the “end” of the Mayan calendar is really anything to worry about since, as one poster pointed out, the calendar doesn’t really stop - it just rolls over and starts again from the beginning.

I, too, wish we could see the night sky more clearly here in civilization. When my wife and I are on the beach in the Philippines it is so completely dark (and the air is so clean) that the stars seem like you could reach out and touch them. It is awe-inspiring.

God love you,
Paul

i wish they would not have titled this thread the bible code and 2012.

2012 has nothing to do with the bilbe code. 2012 has to do with the mayan calendar and the date of december 21st. on that day the world might end, or there could be a big heavenly event.

watch for the show on the national geographic channel about the mayan civiliation and their knowledge of astronomy. very interedting.
2012 is an election year…who knows what type of candidates we could get stuck with THAT time around!!!

i should think the senior members should lighten up. they are the ones with the angry replies.

Simple Answer:

GOD will choose when the Earth is to end not MAN.
👍

p.s. i didn’t say that galileo said the earth was flat.

at least some people posting on this thread aren’t totally close minded.

I’m not sure who exactly it is that you think is giving you such angry replies, and what on earth it has to do with you being a Catholic. For one, I would find it *extremely *amusing if you were to leave Catholicism based on my comments. That would be like leaving The Republican Party because you were offended by Tony Blair.

I’m not Catholic. I’m not even a believer of any kind. I’m just a random person posting on a thread about the Bible Code, which has miraculously turned into a discussion about the Mayan calendar.

*Edit: Actually, amusing is the wrong word. Baffling? Bizarre? Shocking? *

miraculously because the mayan calendar has to do with the date of december 21, 2012.

i don’t think i would seriously leave the Catholic church because of what i read here in Catholic Answers Forum.

to paul dupre - i like how you think. you are not afraid to be open minded. glad you share an interest in the mayan culture. archaeology can teach us so much. i love watching the shows about the holy land where they are digging on archaeological sites and are finding sites that are found in the old testament.
who knows what we will find out about the past from the archaeologists who are busy working today.

When the History Channel first made it’s debut in my childhood home back in the late 80s (or so) My mom appropriately named it “The Hitler Channel” because back then it seemed like all they showed was footage and documentaries about Hitler. I guess they could only show so much about Hitler and then had to resort to other topics, trouble is, average Joe Shmo thinks real history is boring, so the History channel has to keep up it’s ratings by showing this garbage & conspiracy theory junk.

I guess I’m a history snob, because one of my pet peeves is innaccurate portrayals of history in “historical movies” and the History Channel. I’m especially careful about what my kids watch on History channel.

Avoid this Bible Code stuff like the plage, it only serves to distract people from what they SHOULD be focusing on such as reading the Word of God, going to Mass, and receiving the sacraments, all exist to bring us ever closer in our relationship with Christ.

Don’t get distracted with parlor tricks!

Now, the Mayan culture/ predictions, well that’s interesting but I don’t think ppl shoudl worry and base their lives on it like so many seem to be doing with the year 2012.

A few months back I saw this special on the History Channel call “The Bible Code” where Jewish scholars found an encrypted message in the Torah that made prophecies and such. It seemed very interesting. Anyway, I bring it up now because I ran into a book the other day on the year 2012 and how something big is suppose to happen then. It dedicated a chapter to “The Bible Code” talking about how the Torah has an encrypted message saying that something big (perhaps catastrophic) will occur that year. If you know what I’m talking about I was just wondering what your thoughts are on this being that it come out of a section of our own bible. As Catholics/Christians should we dismiss this? Or is there perhaps something to this “Bible Code” that some of our Jewish brothers and sisters are studying?

Sorry for the poor citation but here is a Wikipedia link to what I’m talking about:

Gnostic crapola-how come Nostradamus doen’t confirm this?If Nostradamus doesn’t confirm it,it can’t be true-sorry,I don’t have access to a tongue-in-cheek emoticon.😃

Are you sure it’s a hoax? It was on TBN (Trinity Broadcasting Network) a couple of weeks ago. Wouldn’t they have known if it were a hoax of not?
I wouldn’t rely on TBN (Total Balogna Network) if my life depended on it. They had a special on one time last year saying how Samson couldn’t have had the strength that he did, that story that appears in the OT is nothing but a myth. Sorry. I wish they would drop TBN for EWTN.

You can test for the absurdity of the BC by looking for a sentence you know to be untrue or nonsensical - it will definitely be in there 🙂 If a book is long enough, the same info will be found - it certainly need not be the Bible.

The whole thing is rubbish - as was Michael Drosnin’s false prophecy, based on the supposed code, of nuclear war in 2006.

All prophecies of the end, & all claims to set a date - without exception - are worthless, false, empty, & absolutely certain not to be fulfilled. And they will always find somebody to believe them: that I guarantee 🙂
