I’m re-reading a good book by Rabbi Elliot Dorff titled “love Your Neighbor and Yourself.” It’s a book on “conservative” Jewish morals ( as opposed to the Reformed or Orthodox variations, or even good Catholic morals, for sure - a necessary disclaimer).
Like Pope St. John Paul II’s “Theology of the Body” this book’s starting point for human morality is that we don’t belong to ourselves, but we belong to God. (our bodies belong to God) So, his straightforward observation is that we thus should obey God’s commands for living – the “Torah” (“instruction”).This in fact is the premise of all scripture.
The purpose of this thread is to elaborate this basic point as he does, with scriptural foundation. Briefly:
Ex 19:5 Now, if you obey me completely and keep my covenant, you will be my treasured possession among all peoples, though all the earth is mine.
Dt 10:14 Look, the heavens, even the highest heavens, belong to the LORD, your God, as well as the earth and everything on it.
Ps 24:1 The earth is the LORD’s and all it holds, the world and those who dwell in it.

When we inevitably are confronted with that question “why?” about this or that morality that we should obey, it should be good for us to recall these verses.
(I don’t fashion myself as a good evangelist, I just share good things that I run across.)
