not that i have much time to watch tv but i will occasionally watch this show because i liked the nerdiness and the science jokes.

i just wish there was less sexual reference in it.

i hope it’s not sinful to watch it though.

does anyone else enjoy it from time to time?

I love the Big Bang Theory, but don’t appreciate the sexual references either. I think that’s when the episodes start to suffer. When they really shine is when they stick with their nerdy jokes.

I totally agree. I especially loves how when Sheldon’s mom comes to town and they visit churches and they end up praying at a Catholic Church.

One of my favorite shows!

Am I the only one that finds such shows are only further leading to the degradation of our culture and society? I’d sooner watch reruns of What’s My Line? or The Rifleman… something a bit more refined and intelligible. Even shows I used to love like Seinfeld I can hardly stand anymore. Quite frankly I find my TV is on less and less.

In my opinion creativity wise television is experiencing a Renaissance. There are so many good shows out there. The creative outpouring is so massive that some of them are better than some blockbuster movies out there.

When it comes to teaching morals however, it can be a bit degrading.

When it comes to art (or to use a more neutral term “creative outputs”), I usually have an open attitude about it - unless it’s too offensive for my own tastes or is blasphemous. A TV show like Game of Thrones, notorious for its sex and violence, is no biggie for me. But that doesn’t mean I’m not being careful! I still hold on to my Catholic faith and values and I make sure not to be triggered by the scenes that I watch into committing sin. Being tempted to sin is one thing; doing the act itself is another.

And what of the children growing up with these shows that don’t know any better? You might say it’s up to the parents to monitor what they watch but it shouldn’t have to be that way in my opinion and of course many parents don’t even bother. I don’t know that I agree there are that many great shows out there now. In the 50s there was a handful of networks putting out better shows than we have now such as Life is Worth Living with Archbishop Sheen, Lucy, The Rifleman, What’s My Line, Ed Sullivan, The Honeymooners, I’ve Got a Secret, Bonanza etc. Now it’s almost like there’s too much choice and I can never find anything to watch! I was definitely born in the wrong era. And don’t even get me started on music! Slowly TV and music will become even more degraded if the trend continues, which it will.

I’m a lover of The big Bang Theory. I watch all shows - repeats and premier.

Well you probably don’t have cable. 😛

Or maybe it’s the generation gap. The 50’s was the Golden Age of Television. That’s why I’m calling this decade a Renaissance.

But yeah you have a point about the children and the degradation of morals in television and music. I think parents should be stricter?

Actually there ARE shows out there that are at least safe to watch. Downton Abbey and Doctor Who are among a few of them. Although Downton had this controversy about a rape scene, but mostly the show is harmless escapism. Gosh even some cartoons for kids are becoming critically acclaimed (Legend of Korra, Gumball, Adventure Time, etc.).

In my DVD collection I have all ten series of the British comedy Red Dwarf. On one of the DVDs they have the documentary “Dwarfing USA”, about the failed US pilot to this brilliant Britcom (watch it on youtube, and you will see why it failed). It’s a rare look into how modern US network sitcoms are done.
Bottom line, historically, British comedy has been story-driven. US comedy is one-liner-driven.
The BBT is good, and I have laughed many times at it.
But it’s typical network sitcom and will be forgotten 5 years after it leaves the air.

I don’t like it as it mocks and degrades intelligent people for the amusement of people of average intelligence at best.

Me too! Although, I also like Community so maybe my taste in television is somewhat lacking. 😃

Except that the people of average intelligence at best don’t actually get the jokes. 🙂

I’m sorry, the pseudoscientific phrases they string together to sound intelligent despite those phrases being meaningless just wrecks it for me.
