Tomorrow (Sunday) my best friend and I are both being confirmed into the Roman Catholic church. We are extremely excited! It has been quite the journey getting to this point, and we have mostly been amazed at how much we were already in agreement with the doctrines of the church. My best friend has a favorite quote from Bishop Fulton Sheen, “There are not 100 people who hate the Catholic church, but there are contless people who hate the Catholic church for what they think it is.” I may have gotten the quote slightly wrong, but the spirit of that quote rings so true for both of us. We are excited both for our Chrismation/Confirmation and for our first communion. We hope that we can find housing closer to the parish so that we will be able to attend mass and receive communion more than once a week. We will be trying to fast for the whole morning, even though it is not required, because it will be our first communion.
I’m in the choir at the parish, but I won’t be sitting with them because of the big event, mostly t to have time to reflect on our first communion, but also because the choir receives communion last and my friend and I should receive together near the beginning of the line. His sponsor is going to reserve a pew for us. I may join the choir for the sending forth hymn, Jubilate Deo, both because it is one of my favorite hymns and because I am the only bass singer in the choir. I’m sure that the only tenor would appreciate it because we’re singing it as a round and him and I harmonize well together.
Our prayers go out for everyone who is being confirmed this weekend and next, and for all new members of the church this year.
