I’ve seen The Big Lebowski a couple of times. I enjoyed it and might even consider watching it again but I can’t say that it strikes me as being rich in spiritual value. Reviews of the book make it seem less than mediocre. I suppose you could find Christian value in lots of things if you tried but this seems like a stretch. I wonder at the prudence of using a film that the US Conference of Catholic Bishops has rated as “morally offensive” to spread the Gospel our Lord at a function sanction by a Catholic church. But yeah, let’s bring the Word of God down to the level of a pop culture cult film that features drug use, sex and 267 f-bombs so we can laugh at the funny dialog at a church function because someone wrote a book about it with the word gospel in it.

Nothing, I know, like riding in years late to comment on a film.
I haven’t seen all of The Big Lebowski, but what I have seen makes me wonder about deriving any religious method or even about watching it. Indeed, the reason I found this thread is that I’ve heard people speak highly of the film and I caught part of it tonight, and that made me wonder how it had been rated by the Bishops. It would appear the rating is “O”. Which leads me to this question, are we really even supposed to freely watch films that are rated as O?
Anyhow, while I don’t see any religious content in this film, I do see quite a bit in some other Coen Brother’s films. A Serious Man is based on the Book of Job. Their version of True Grit starts with one of the Proverbs. And even No Country For Old Men slips in a line from the New Testament in a sort of veiled fashion.

I’ve watched the Big Lebowskie a couple of times and often quote it, although I think you have to be under the influence of something to really enjoy it. I can’t possibly imagine it having an edifying, church-appropriate connection, though.
