sure and begorrah, i know that we are allowed to drink coffee or tea while we fast today, BUT … can we put milk or cream in the coffee or tea? or does that break the fast?

I was under the impression that all liquids were legal, if I’m wrong I’ll keep tabs on this thread for correction.

Well I am sure that you can and should drink water, but I too thought that coffee and tea were out.

our parish newsletter explicitly states that we could drink tea or coffee. what i want to know is whether one can put milk in the tea or coffee or must they be black.

All liquids are permitted.

There is some question as to how thick a milkshake can be and still be considered liquid; so don’t push it. 😃

Fasting The law of fasting requires a Catholic from the 18th Birthday [Canon 97] to the 59th Birthday * to reduce the amount of food eaten from normal. The Church defines this as one meal a day, and two smaller meals which if added together would not exceed the main meal in quantity. Such fasting is obligatory on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The fast is broken by eating between meals and by drinks which could be considered food (milk shakes, but not milk). Alcoholic beverages do not break the fast; however, they seem contrary to the spirit of doing penance.

looks like milk is okay, so it should be okay in your coffee too

Under current Catholic teachings, liquids do not break the fast. Milk, cream, fruit juice, coffee, tea, sodas, and so on. I myself drink a quart of non-fat milk daily, even on fast days, I need the calcium, and the easy to digest protein.🙂

Now a true “black fast” would not allow any dairy products. 😦

My understanding of a “black fast” is absolutely nothing to eat or nothing nourishing to drink except water for a specific time, usually for one to three days. Because it can be harmful, it is not recommended for more three days maximum. I got this information from a spiritual director I had many years ago. have been doing this for almost 40 years on Good Fridays. Black fasts are not mandatory, and you are not to practice them if they would harm your health for any reason. If you undertake them, talk first to a knowledgeable priest who does spiritual direction.
