i’ve also thought about this while meditating on the “finding in the temple” mystery during the Rosary.
i imagine Mary and Joseph arriving home and in great distress over Jesus. they ask everyone in town but no one has seen him. Joseph decides to head back to Jerusalem early the next day. Mary is home and thus begins her deep sorrow alone. She is flooded with tears and despair, and is barely able to sleep much less pray.
Joseph returns the next day without any progress. They search the town again with the same empty result. Mary and Joseph pray fervently and decide to try Jerusalem again, but this time Mary wants to come too. Joseph prepares for his third trip back.
Finally they reach Jerusalem, exhausted, frustrated with Jesus, full of sorrow and despair, when someone directs them to the temple. There they see Jesus talking to the elders. He doesn’t get a spanking but he knows he needs to obey. The end.
