I went to Mass this evening and watched everything closely. You never know when I might want to blog about something 🙂 Anyway, during the preparation of the gifts the priest poured wine into a main chalice and four off to the side, but with the water he only poured into the main chalice. So my question is, can the wine alone be consecrated and become the blood of Christ, or does it have to have water to “count”?

Yes, it’s just fine with only wine…and in fact the drop of water is only supposed to go in the main chalice.

Thank you. I didn’t want to seem like I was starting something, I was just confused.

Correct as answered however if a single container of wine is brought to the altar in the offertory the water should be added to it before it is distributed among the chalices. (no this is not called “fractioning”)

Hmmm… that’s not how it was. Single cruet of wine distributed among 5 chalices; one cruet of water went right into the priests chalice. After the priest consecrated the elements and took communion he put the rest of the Blood of Christ which was in his chalice into one of the other chalices.
