Hi!
I really like blues music in all its forms. One song that I really listened to was Hoochie coochie man. It seems to have a lot of hoodoo references in the lyrics. Hoodoo is not good at all. But I still listen to the song. Muddy Waters even told in an interview that going to church is important for singing the blues.
Singing this song isn’t really like trying out hoodoo. It’s just a song.
It seems like we have more important things to focus on in our walk with Christ than some hoodoo references in a song.
How do you Catholics view this?

I am not very familiar with the song, but a quick look at the lyrics suggests that the language is figurative. He says he has magic. It is a way of saying that his attractiveness to women is like magic in its strength or effectiveness. All that stuff about a gypsy and a black cat is just to embellish the story. It’s poetic liberty.

I had a dentist who once told me she had magic. She said it when I was trembling as she brought the Novocaine needle towards me. She told me she had magic, and I would not feel a thing. She wiggled my cheek just before the jab, and I didn’t feel the needle. I didn’t believe for a second that it was magic. The truth is that she was just an awesomely skilled dentist.
