Our Lord is sacramentally present in the Eucharist… not symbolically. The Catholic doctrine is that while the species of bread and wine remain as ‘accidents’ (theological term), the substance has been transformed into the body and blood of Jesus. It is only the substance which changes, not the outward appearance. However, they do not stay bread and wine.
