LDS folks, Since you believe only your baptizim is valid, please tell me, is that the salt lake variety, or the St. Joe Mo. bunch or the recent bad news bunch of a practising pedophile in the desert of N.Mex? I`m sure there are others who claim they are the right mormons, so whats a person to choose to be sure and get a bapt. that God will recognize. Garbage in Garbage out. Garland

Interesting question.

Since I belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, my answer would be—that of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I would hope that your answer would be similar–that is, that you believe that those with whose doctrines you agree have the ‘valid’ baptism.

After all, any other position would be rank hypocrisy, and that would not be a good thing.

Good observation. Even Joseph Smith’s wife went for the Missouri brand with her son after her husband died. She didn’t like Brigham Young, though his group became the larger organization.

I’m also a Catholic convert. I was LDS before, and much of this is equally confusing to the membership.

Best,

Not really.

There is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, by far the largest group of Mormons, and the one most people think of when they hear 'Mormons." These are the group that went to Salt Lake led by Brigham Young.

The second largest used to be called the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (not sure about the capital “D”) and is now called “Church of Christ,” after going bankrupt, and is now safely Protestant mainstream, complete with the requisite religiously correct version of the Trinity and everything. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Catholics accepted their baptisms just fine.

After that there are a hundred or so of little offshoots: Strangites, and others, with memberships mostly in the hundreds (a few have a couple of thousand.) Many of those are polygamous, some are adamantly opposed to polygamy, some are pure communal groups. Brigham Young, with some cause, blamed Emma for Joseph’s death. After all, she was the one who convinced him, against his better judgment and Brigham’s advice, to go to Carthage. Emma and her sons stayed–renounced the CoJCoLDS and ended up founding the RLDS. I’m not all that certain she would have been welcome in Utah under Brigham even if she had wanted to come, which she very definitely did not. She remarried.

It has never confused me any. The early Christian church has lots of little offshoots that sparked for awhile then faded away, too. However, THOSE small shoots had a lot of help disappearing from the main Catholic church, after awhile. The penalty for ‘heresy’ was rather harsh back in those days. Excommunication quite often meant excommunication from life, not just the church.

I do not as a rule discuss temple matters in a public forum.
To bad for you… I will disclose it then if you don’t mind because I have never sworn that my bowels are to be taken out if I do so. (Well if you did become a Mormon before the early 80s after which it was removed from ritual.)
Why are you wearing green aprons that resemble the fig leave even though God despised it? (You don’t need to be a Mormon to see that one.)
Why do you wear special underwear with interesting symbols on them? They are comfy, I admit, but why?
Why do people get baptised for the deceased?
Why does someone who wishes to get a temple recommend disclose information about the underwear he wears?
How come they show a film presentation a drama at the temple where the archangel Michael is shown to be the first man, Adam? (Temple Endowment Ceremony)
Why are the secret handshakes etc… taken from Masonic ritual?
Now I’ve said what most interested people already know… Information is disclosed and you are not revealing more than is already revealed…
“Testament” means “covenant”. In modern revelation the Lord has identified the Restoration as a “new and everlasting covenant,” and the Book of Mormon as effectively the text of that covenant, as shown in the following verse:

D&C 84:

57 And they shall remain under this condemnation until they repent and remember the new covenant, even the Book of Mormon and the former commandments which I have given them, not only to say, but to do according to that which I have written.

There are many passages in LDS scripture that refer to this new covenant; here are some more:

D&C 22:

1 Behold, I say unto you that all old covenants have I caused to be done away in this thing; and this is a new and an everlasting covenant, even that which was from the beginning.

3 For it is because of your dead works that I have caused this last covenant and this church to be built up unto me, even as in days of old.

D&C 84:

47 And every one that hearkeneth to the voice of the Spirit cometh unto God, even the Father.

48 And the Father teacheth him of the covenant which he has renewed and confirmed upon you, which is confirmed upon you for your sakes, and not for your sakes only, but for the sake of the whole world.

“Another Testament of Jesus Christ” means “Another Covenant of Jesus Christ,” which is what the Restored gospel and the Book of Mormon effectively are—the old covenant having been broken through the Apostasy.
I need to tell you something: Whatever you want to call it… it is another gospel that has been warned about in Galatians 1…

GOD said:
6 I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:
7 Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.
8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
9 As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.

There was no apostasy and the Bible is our witness. Apostasy is rather to claim that God had a body of flesh and bones and had physical sexual intercourse with Mary (and then you still call her a virgin because she had sex with that Elohim guy and not with a normal man). Afterwards you mean to tell us that everybody was spiritually conceived by this Elohim guy’s heavenly wife and then sent to earth to inherit a human body. You also mean to tell us that Satan and Jesus are brothers and that we are their brothers and siters as well… by the way: Where is Kolob?
I think that’s what is making this picture so funny… it’s true…
The Bible and the Mormon Scriptures are in direct opposition. Not only can the Bible be laid out in Geography and archaeology, but it also directly contradicts major teachings of Mormon scriptures. This is not another testament… this is the fairy tale of the century written down by a man who supposedly had an encounter with Jesus Christ and was not changed by it, but was convicted of several crimes some decades after the event (of which there are different accounts too which are contradictory). What is worse is that D&C 132:20 tells us that Mormon believers can become gods… the old serpent’s lie…
Remains of elephant-like creatures called the Mammoth has been discovered in America.
Proof they could have possibly been there in the times of the BoM?
They are not. They are asked to listen to the Holy Ghost.
There it tells me this: “BOSOM (see also heart)”. I guess I can take those places as “heart” reference then as it is the same.
D&C 9:8 “But, behold I say unto you, that you must study it out in your mind; then you must ask if it be right, and if it is right I will cause that your bosom shall burn within you; therefore you shall feel that it is right.”
Other than that there is only one (1!) place in the BoM where you find anything like that. The issue is that in Moroni 10:3 the reader is being told to ponder things in their heart. Who tells us that the assurance that is being promised in Moroni 10:4 is really from God?

GOD said:
“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”

Part 2 of 2
For the same reasons that the Old and the New testaments appear to contradict each other in some cases.
Where?
I need to tell you something however… The Mormon Scriptures contradict each other dramatically in several fundamental and significant places.
Problem 1: How many gods?

  1. *]There is only one God – 2 Nephi 31:21; Alma 11:27-39, 44; 3 Nephi 11:27; Mormon 7:7
    *]There are several gods – D&C Section 121:32; 132:18-20, 37

    Problem 2: Spirit or man?

    1. *]God is Spirit - Alma 18:26-28; 22:8-11
      *]God has a body – D&C Section 130:22

      Problem 3: Where is he?

      1. *]God dwells in the heart - Alma 34:36
*]God does not dwell in the heart – D&C Section 130:3

        Problem 4: How many creators?

        1. *]There is one creating God - 2 Nephi 2:14; Jacob 4:9; P.G.P. Moses 2
*]There are several creating gods - P.G.P. Abraham 4, 5

Problem 5: God or father of lies?

          1. *]God cannot lie - Ether 3:12; 2 Nephi 9:34
*]God commands to lie - P.G.P. Abraham 2:22-25

Problem 6: Change vs. no change

            1. *]God’s word unchangeable - Alma 41:8
              *]God’s word can change - D.&C. Section 56:4-5

Problem 7: We were and we were not

              1. *]Pre-existence - Jacob 4:9; Alma 18:28, 34-36
                *]No pre-existence - D.&C. Section 93:23, 29-33; P.G.P. Abraham 3:18, 21-23

Problem 8: What are the chances?

                1. *]Death seals man’s fate - Mosiah 2:36-39; Alma 34:32-35
                  *]Chance after death - D. & C. Section 76:106-112; 88:99

Problem 9: Baptism or not? (Do other people have to get their feet wet after I pass?)

                  1. *]Heathen saved without baptism - Moroni 8:22-23 2 Nephi 9:25-26; Mosiah 15:24-27
                    *]Baptism for the dead - D. & C. Section 128:5, 17-18

Problem 10: Heaven and Hell or 3 Kingdoms?

                    1. *]Heaven or hell - 2 Nephi 28:22; 1 Nephi 15:35
                      *]Three kingdoms in heaven (most saved) - D. & C. Section 76:43, 70-112

                      Problem 11: Murderous!

                      1. *]Forgiveness for murder - 3 Nephi 30:2
                        *]No forgiveness for murder - D. & C. Section 42:18

Problem 12: Cursed if you do, cursed if you don’t

                        1. *]Polygamy condemned - Jacob 1:15, 2:24, 3:5; Mosiah 11:2
                          *]Polygamy commanded - D. & C. Section 132:1, 37-39, 61
                          All of them.
It is impossible for two contradicting statements to be true at the same time. Jesus Christ cannot be the Father, the Son and God when God and the Father are two distinct and separate persons different than Him. That is impossible.

Dianaiad,
My friend Lydia has got issues with me now because I told her by email that I will not let her come around to my house with her missionary sisters… I told her to just get me and we’ll go to your church together on sunday. As if it isn’t enough that I am going to miss mass that day!

Zundrah (though I did notice you signed with your real name once–I wish I had a photographic memory:) ),
I hope you do go and if you do I think you will enjoy meeting people who are not so strange after all. It sounds like Lydia has been a sincere friend to you, and whatever happens I hope that can continue for both of you. God bless you.

Zundrah, are you confused about whether to become a Mormon or a Catholic? I’m confused?🤷

Mormons seek to confuse, to cause doubt, to sow error wherever possible, but most especially with the vulnerable.

I was under the impression that Lydia was a friend of Zundrah’s, but Zerinus is sure Lydia is a missionary. If she is a missionary she is not a sincere friend, she is doing what Rebecca said in the preceding post.

Yeah, sincere Mormon friends are known to fall off the map as soon as it is made clear there is not an interest in Mormonism. Co-dependency is one of the first things Mormons seek to develop. See it already, where Jennifer said her “friend” was not happy she said no to going with her to church. Manipulation.

Actually, Z, your answer in post 307 wasn’t quite complete. The ‘change’ from “white and delightsome” to “pure and delightsome” was made in the 1840 edition of the Book of Mormon, by Joseph Smith, as a correction from the first printer’s edition to reflect what his written manuscript read. However, the 1837 edition was used as the basis for the 1879 and 1820 editions, and the phrase ‘white and delightsome’ (used, as you mentioned, in the same sense as it is used in the bible; “white,” meaning “pure,” not “pale of skin.”)

The 1981 (current) edition of the Book of Mormon has an “about this edition” section which refers to this; the editors/scholars of the book looked at the prepublished manuscripts, and the early revisions that Joseph Smith himself made, and used those in the current edition; not to ‘change’ it, but to bring it back to its original intended form.

Oh, and to fix the spelling and grammar, of course.
Thank you again, dianaiad. I have checked, and you are correct, but not entirely. 🙂 The change was indeed made by Joseph Smith in the 1840 edition, but not “as a correction from the first printer’s edition to reflect what his written manuscript read”. Here is a quote:

To clarify meaning, Joseph Smith changed the word white to pure in the 1840 edition. Later American editions did not show this change because they had followed the first European and 1837 editions. The Prophet’s wording was restored in the 1981 edition. (Source. Click on “Additional Information” to expand)

The reason for the change was the same as I had stated, except that it had been made by Joseph Smith rather than by someone else.

Read my reply to question 8 in post #307, and don’t ask so many dumb questions.
“And it came to pass” your Book of Mormon showed itself for what it truly is, the violence promotion in verse 25 is “exceedingly” disturbing, “yea, even a sore” disturbance.

2 Nephi chapter 5 verses 21 - 25

21 And he had caused the cursing to come upon them, yea, even a sore cursing, because of their iniquity. For behold, they had hardened their hearts against him, that they had become like unto a flint; wherefore, as they were white, and exceedingly fair and delightsome, that they might not be enticing unto my people the Lord God did cause a skin of blackness to come upon them.

22 And thus saith the Lord God: I will cause that they shall be loathsome unto thy people, save they shall repent of their iniquities.

23 And cursed shall be the seed of him that mixeth with their seed; for they shall be cursed even with the same cursing. And the Lord spake it, and it was done.

24 And because of their cursing which was upon them they did become an idle people, full of mischief and subtlety, and did seek in the wilderness for beasts of prey.

25 And the Lord God said unto me: They shall be a scourge unto thy seed, to stir them up in remembrance of me; and inasmuch as they will not remember me, and hearken unto my words, they shall scourge them even unto destruction.

3 Nephi chapter 2 verses 14 - 16

14 And it came to pass that those Lamanites who had united with the Nephites were numbered among the Nephites;

15 And their curse was taken from them, and their skin became white like unto the Nephites;

16 And their young men and their daughters became exceedingly fair, and they were numbered among the Nephites, and were called Nephites. And thus ended the thirteenth year.

Daniel 11:

35 And some of them of understanding shall fall, to try them, and to purge, and to make them white, even to the time of the end: because it is yet for a time appointed.

Daniel 12:

10 Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand.

Song of Solomon 5:

10 My beloved is white and ruddy, the chiefest among ten thousand.

So you admit that LDS teaching is that white skin is better than black skin and you are using the Old Testament to back up the Book of Mormon.
What is the “Mark of Cain” according to Mormons?

Still nice to know that you FINALLY let black men into your priesthood.

And that YOUR VERSION of God is only RACIST some of the time and not all of the time.

Daniel 12:

How nice to know that I am “wicked” just because I don’t agree with your beliefs and that I will not “understand” but you “understand” because you are “wise”.

I guess ignoring logic and evidence makes you “wise”.
Read my reply to question 8 in post #307, and don’t ask so many dumb questions.
I’m just a “dumb” and “wicked” person and I should stop asking “dumb questions” because you “wisely” told me to stop.

The following is a quote from this website Catholic Answers “Mormon Stumpers”:
catholic.com/library/Mormon_Stumpers.asp

------------------------------- START QUOTE ---------------------------------
"Somehow, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints have been persuaded by their leaders that they have always been on the receiving end of uncharitable comments and unjust accusations. From the time Joseph Smith began his work in 1820, the Mormon church has gloried in the “fact” that it is a persecuted people. For them, this is a sure sign that it is the Lord’s true church; all opposition comes ultimately from Satan. So, if you do offer a question or a criticism, be prepared for this reaction.

Many Mormons, including their hierarchy, look upon any criticism—regardless of how honest and sincere—as perverseness inspired by the Evil One. But these same individuals ignore their own past (and present) attacks on Christian churches. You might like to point out a few of these to those Mormons who say their church “never attacks other churches.”
  1. “I was answered that I must join none of them (Christian churches), for they were all wrong…their creeds were an abomination in [God’s] sight; that those professors were all corrupt” (Joseph Smith—History 1:19).
  2. “Orthodox Christian views of God are pagan rather than Christian” (Mormon Doctrine of Deity, B. H. Roberts [General Authority], 116).
  3. “Are Christians ignorant? Yes, as ignorant of the things of God as the brute beast” (Journal of Discourses, John Taylor [3rd Mormon President], 13:225).
  4. “The Roman Catholic, Greek, and Protestant church, is the great corrupt, ecclesiastical power, represented by great Babylon” (Orson Pratt, Writings of an Apostle, Orson Pratt, n. 6, 84).
  5. “All the priests who adhere to the sectarian [Christian] religions of the day with all their followers, without one exception, receive their portion with the devil and his angels” (The Elders Journal, Joseph Smith, ed. Vol. 1, n. 4, 60).
  6. [Under the heading, “Church of the Devil,” Apostle Bruce R. McConkie lists:] “The Roman Catholic Church specifically—singled out, set apart, described, and designated as being ‘most abominable above all other churches’ (I Ne. 13:5)” (Mormon Doctrine, 1958, 129).
  7. “Believers in the doctrines of modern Christendom will reap damnation to their souls (Morm. 8; Moro. 8)” (Mormon Doctrine, 1966, Bruce R. McConkie, 177).
Some contemporary Mormons, embarrassed—at least publicly—by McConkie’s ranting, will respond with, “That’s only his opinion.” This is disingenuous at best. Keep in mind that McConkie, who died in 1985, was raised to the level of “apostle” in the Mormon church after he had written all these things. And still today, his Mormon Doctrine is published by a church-owned publishing company and remains one of the church’s bestsellers."

What are you trying to say?
The Bible mentions white as pure, but that does not at all mean that white means pure in the BoM, especially in this case… In the same sentence we see what the “white” is actually applied to: The curse was for them to become black of skin and that sets it in a totally different context.
“For behold, they had hardened their hearts against him, that they had become like unto a flint; wherefore, as they were white, and exceedingly fair and delightsome, that they might not be enticing unto my people the Lord God did cause a skin of blackness to come upon them.” (2 Nephi 5:21)
“And the skins of the Lamanites were dark, according to the mark which was set upon their fathers, which was a curse upon them because of their transgression and their rebellion against their brethren, who consisted of Nephi, Jacob and Joseph, and Sam, who were just and holy men.” (Alma 3:6)
“And their curse was taken from them, and their skin became white like unto the Nephites;” (3 Nephi 2:15)

Brigham Young said:
“You see some classes of the human family that are black, uncouth, uncomely, disagreeable and low in their habits, wild, and seemingly deprived of nearly all the blessings of the intelligence that is generally bestowed upon mankind.
The first man that committed the odious crime of killing one of his brethren will be cursed the longest of any one of the children of Adam. Cain slew his brother. Cain might have been killed, and that would have put a termination to that line of human beings.
This was not to be, and the Lord put a mark upon him, which is the flat nose and black skin. Trace mankind down to after the flood, and then another curse is pronounced upon the same race–that they should be the “servant of servants;” and they will be, until that curse is removed.”

Brigham Young - President and second ‘Prophet’ of the Mormon Church, 1844-1877- Extract from Journal of Discourses.

Why did they “stop” being racist? Well it was “revealed” to Kimball. Nice and I thought it was only about the money…
This interview was conducted on August 16, 1978 at the Church Office Building. The interviewer was one Wesley Walters and the person interviewed was Mormon ‘Apostle’ LeGrand Richards.
WALTERS: On this revelation, of the priesthood to the Negro, I’ve heard all kinds of stories: I’ve heard that Joseph Smith appeared; and then I heard another story that Spencer Kimball had, had a concern about this for some time, and simply shared it with the apostles, and they decided that this was the right time to move in that direction. Are any of those stories true, or are they all?
RICHARDS: Well, the last one is pretty true, and I might tell you what provoked it in a way. Down in Brazil, there is so much Negro blood in the population there that it’s hard to get leaders that don’t have Negro blood in them. We just built a temple down there. It’s going to be dedicated in October. All those people with Negro blood in them have been raising the money to build that temple. If we don’t change, then they can’t even use it. Well, Brother Kimball worried about it, and he prayed a lot about it.
So much for revelation. If there never had been any racism, how come this did happen?
Here is more…
Before this “revelation” came to “Prophet” Spencer Kimball in June 1978, General Authority, Bruce R McConkie had said this much about the issue:

Bruce R McConkie said:
“The Blacks are denied the Priesthood; under no circumstances can they hold this delegation of authority from the Almighty. The Negroes are not equal with other races where the receipt of certain blessings are concerned, particularly the priesthood and the temple blessings that flow there from, but this inequality is not of man’s origin, it is the Lord’s doings.”
(Mormon Doctrine, pp. 526-527).

Well at least Young was wrong about this one here… Phew!

Brigham Young said:
“Shall I tell you the law of God in regard to the African race? If the white man who belongs to the chosen seed mixes his blood with the seed of Cain, the penalty, under the law of God is death on the spot. This will always be so.”
(Journal of Discourses, Vo. 10, p. 110)

As I said, as a rule I don’t discuss temple ceremonies in public forums. That does not stop you from discussing it. You can discuss it all you want. But you won’t get any response from me.

You can call it “another gospel” all you want. It is the Restored gospel nevertheless.
I guess I can call out where the problems are all I want because you just get that glazed over look on your eyes and tune out?
You couldn’t find any counters to my counters and the last effort in trying to counter me resembles the answer of a toddler? (“No! No! No!”)
What about posts #364 and #365? Do you deny those major contradictions? I mean those are affecting Mormon Doctrine down to the core!

Zerinus:

I am still waiting for an answer to my request for proof. Or is there none? 🤷

Zundrah, are you confused about whether to become a Mormon or a Catholic? I’m confused?🤷
gurneyhalleck The Catholic faith is the one and only faith chosen and founded by christ! 😃 Protestants are just fallen away due to lack of understanding and a additon of rebellion… 😉

Catholics; pray for protestants please… that they do not join the wrong church while they are lost from the one true church that Christ chose for them…
