The Book of Mormon... have you read it?

Have any of you guys ever read the Book of Mormon?

I have the book of Mormon at home and I often read it too. Have you ever read it, if so then how did you get it?

It is called the book of Mormon because it was a guy called Mormon who put all the books together and collectively made one book out of it.

That’s a bit like calling the bible the book of John, or the book of Peter, or what ever…

Why wasn’t it given a proper decent name?🤷
 
Never read it, wasn’t aware of the origin of the term Mormon.

But if that is the belief then it seems like a perfectly reasonable name for the book.

After all some of the books of the Bible were named after their writers, the Bible being a collection of books, not just one

It is written exactly like the bible, the book names, the chapters and the verses and how one page has two side to it.

I get that, I just don’t see why any of that is relevant to your original thread topic about the name chosen for the BoM.

What I mean is, in the book of mormon there are books all named after the writers e.g. Either, Nephi - they are all the names of the writer and in it there is the book written by the man called mormon and he put all the different books together and collectively called it all - The Book Of Mormon! What I’m saying is this, our bible is called the bible - Hebrew translation of the word bible is “fact” or “law”. But the people from the LDS church just called there’s after a simple man who only wrote a few books that went into it. So it is like calling the bible The book of Solomon, or the book of Genesis.

My point is that the man called Mormon was obviously a very egoistic and selfish man for calling it after him self, don’t you think so?

Ok I see what you’re saying now.

By the way the word Bible comes from Greek, not Hebrew, ‘‘Biblia’’ which is the plural of ‘‘Biblion’’ : ‘‘book’’

(Correct me if I’m wrong I don’t claim to have a great knowledge of Greek)

It is written in like old English or some thing? To make it sound authentic…? 😊

Could be. I’m not sure how they talked in Smith’s time but that could be possible.

Early 1800’s backwoods Americans of English heritage were probably much more familiar with ELIZABETHAN English than were the English at that time. Especially since they had little contact with reading materials other than the KJV.

I bought two copies, both at used book stores. The first one, I got so disgusted at the tripe and blasphemy, I threw it away. The second one, the bookseller suggested that I make a bookcover out of the paper sack so people wouldn’t know what I was reading. I followed his advice, and I still have it.

The book of Mormon, written by, and made up by, Joseph Smith was written in the exact style of the Bible so that it would be easier for his potential followers to accept it as sacred scripture. I mean, if it looks like scripture it must be scripture, right? WRONG!!!

Bible means book, or The Book.

Mormon is not the name of a person, but rather was taken by Smith from the English, (more = mor) and the Epyptian, (mon = god). Mor-mon = more-god.

Yes, I have read some of their book, it has some interesting stories and can be a bit entertaining. Do I believe for even one second that it is in any way inspired by God? Absolutely not. It is all contrived by one man and has been perpetuated by his followers.

I know many mormons, (or LDS as they now like to be called), and I find their family values and dedication to their church and community something that we could all learn a valuable lesson from. However, their theology is quite simply wrong.

NOT JUST STRONG…CATHOLIC STRONG!!!
 
Be careful what you read and hear and who you come in contact with.

Those strong in the Faith can handle “snakes” (probably not literally) and not be poisoned,
