Dr. Scott Hahn in his tapes THE END on the book of Revelation argues for the position, that the Whore of Babylon is not Rome, which persecuted the Catholic Church , but instead is apostate , worldly Jerusalem which rejected the Messiah. He concedes that this is the minority position but the Biblical evidence that he gives is overwhelming.

Read this article first before posting this thread. This thread is for Protestants who are curious how we Catholic interpret the Book of Revelations.

Hahn is what one would call a preterist, one who interprets the book of Revelation as allegorical of events fulfilled in the 1st century. It is a legitimate position to hold, and in fact, most of Revelation comes out very clearly if interpreted in this light.

I also hold preterist views while maintaining that there is also a fulfillment of the prophecies for the end times.

the Whore is most likely Israel since it is called the Harlot the most times in Scripture.

As do I and as does Dr. Hahn, with the warning that these fulfillments are not to be read like a “code” where, for example, one could definitively identify Gog and Magog with say, Russia, or whoever the current Bad Guy from the north might be.

From the linked article:
Most of the Scripture verses below were taken from Dr. Scott Hahn’s tapes. Listening to Dr. Hahn’s tapes, and trying to catch all the deep truths that he brings out of Sacred Scripture, can be like standing under a waterfall on a hot summer day - a lot of it will pass a person by, but he still gets very wet and refreshed. If you want to hear all the beautiful insights you will have to buy the tapes. They can be ordered from Saint Joseph Communications Phone : 1-800-526-2151.
Available at this same site is a Study guide for this tape series is is almost a transcript of the eleven tape talk, with blanks for the student to fill in while or after listening to the tapes/CD’s. I just finished it and I highly recommend it. 👍

yeah, well after several years of meditation and study, I’ve developed a spiritual historicist approach to Revelation that’ll completely blow away preterism, because it vindicates Catholicisim in history and gives deep spiritual meaning to Church history and the whole of salvation history. I swear that if I can ever get my views organized and out in the orthodox Catholic mainstraim, it’ll revolutionize how modern Catholics look at the book.

In other words, you’ve discovered a remarkable proof which the margins of your Bible are too small to contain? 😃

well, OK, I’m being a little too bold. 😃 I am “quite confident” that I have developed some theological insights and interps that are solidly Catholic and based on Catholic spirituality and and doctrine that COULD very well be useful as an additional approach to the book, and that is far more useful and meaningful than preterism, but not that preterism is in itself something bad or not true. 🙂

Why do people think that what happened is all that will happen?

Eve sinned then Mary came
Abraham took his son to be sacrificed then Jesus came
Moses put the serpent on a stick then Jesus was Crucified
Passover Came for the israelites - then Communion came.
ect…

70 AD Jerusalem was destroyed…

OK, I’ll bite.

70 AD Jerusalem was destroyed then the Catholic Church came.

No,. the end of the world.

We can look at Revelation and see the signs of the end times. “Therefore Watch” as Jesus commanded

but i think that futurism is even more useless than preterism. In the end, they both miss the point. What is of issue is the SPIRITUAL MEANING of Salvation History, not superfluous termporal details of either early Church or late Church history. Can we get beyond the extremes here, people! 😃

OK, i’ll bite even more: the Church was viciously persecuted for three centuries by misunderstanding and proud pagans, before the witness of the martyrs converted the Empire. Then began the great period of the Church’s doctrinal development, in which a very basic process occurs: the sources of Divine Truth are puncuatingly attacked from top to bottom:

I. The Trinity and Incarnation
II. The Pope
III. The General Bishops and Oral Tradition
IV. The Written Tradition (Scripture)
V. Reason.

Just look at the history: first wave of heresies after Constantine primarily aimed at I., culminating with Islam.

Second great attack, the Great Schism, attacks II.

Third great attack, Protestantism, not only denies II but also III.

Fourth great attack, “Enlightenment” rejects I, II, III, and IV.

Final era of modern times doesn’t even recognizne V. ! As I’ve said before, both atheism and relativism are affronts even to reason, let alone the others.

OTOH, I’m saying it’s the end yet. Good news, according to EWTN experts’ analysis of Catholic mystics is, it can all be healed by a minor chastisement, all religious unity restored, and Catholicism reign for great period before the great and terrible and inexcusable fall of the end. But how could all this stuff not be in the apoc? It’s SPIRITUAL way of looking at history.

I know
Bernhardt Rembordt (18th Century)
Cologne will be the site of a terrible battle. Many foreigners will be slaughtered there; both men and women will fight for their Faith. It will be impossible to prevent this horrible devastation. People will wade up to their ankles in blood. At last, a foreign king will appear and win a victory for the cause of the righteous. The remaining enemy will retreat to the Birch tree country. There, the last battle will be fought for the just cause.
At that time France will be divided. The German Empire will choose a simple man as the Emperor, who will rule for a short time. His successor will be the man for whom the world has longed. He will be called a Roman Emperor, and he will give peace to the world. A good and happy era will follow. God will be praised on earth, and war will be no more.
Fr. Nectou (18th Century)
When those things come to pass from which the triumph of the Church will arise, then will such confusion reign upon earth that people will think God has permitted them to have their own contrary will, and that the Providence of God is not concerned about the world. The confusion will be so general that men will not be able to think aright, as if God had withheld His Providence from mankind, and that, during the worst crisis, the best that can be done would be to remain where God has placed us, and persevere in fervent prayers. Two parties will be formed in France which will fight unto death. The party of evil will at first be stronger, and the good side will be weaker. At that time there will be such a terrible crisis that PEOPLE WILL BELIEVE THAT THE END OF THE WORLD HAS COME. Blood will flow in many large cities. The very elements will be confused. IT WILL BE LIKE A LITTLE GENERAL JUDGMENT.
During this revolution, which will very likely be general and not confined to France, Paris will be destroyed so completely that twenty years afterward fathers walking over its ruins with their children will be asked by them what kind of a place that was; to whom they will answer; My child, this was a great city which God has destroyed on account of her crimes.
Yes, Paris will certainly be destroyed; but, before this happens, such signs and portents will be seen, that all good people will be induced to flee away from it. After these most frightful events, order will be restored everywhere. Justice will reign throughout the whole world, and the counter revolution will be accomplished.
The triumph of the Church will then be so complete that nothing like it has ever been seen before, for this will be the last victory of the Church upon earth.
Those Christians who are fortunate enough to survive will thank God for preserving them and giving them the privilege of beholding this glorious triumph of the Church.
