In the “Catholic School Daze” chapter of her book
The Broken Path (a book previously mentioned in
this thread), Judie Brown writes:
Does she essentially mean that one should be willing to call a spade a spade? (No offense to African Americans out there.)
No need to apologize…
it seems the phrase has been around longer than the English language.
I have not read the book, but I would say that political correctness involves more than simply calling a spade a spade, altho it does include that. It also involves not always following a certain set of mostly political ideas simply because those are the ones considered intellectual, socially acceptable, etc.
For example, someone mentioned they hoped that Pope Francis would “do something about” issues like artificial birth control, et al. I am supposed to simply accept this, but if I were to say something like, homosexual activity is objectively a mortal sin, it would start a small thermonuclear war.
The assumption is that the truth lies in what is considered politially correct, so that my acquaintance above was simply stating something related to the truth whereas I would have been saying some ignorant and obviously untrue thing. I *could *say, The Chirch teaches that homosexual activity is objectively a mortal sin, and that would merely start the heated conversation of how bigoted and horrible the “old celibate men in the Vatican” are.
Why do we Catholics have to put up with this? Why are their ideas considered truth and ours considered not fit for polite company?
Well, as I said, I have n’t read the book, bit she could be talking about more than flat-faced implements for the transport of soil, or maybe not.
