In strict Islam the hair must be covered in public. It is considered ‘private’.
 
ok. but how about eyebrows eyelashes , hair on fingers?

the burkini also looks like a scuba suit.

No not that hair. Unless a person is in one of the most fundamental sects… then everything must be covered… do they have a swim suit with gloves, socks and a face veil?

I don’t like the burkini… too much fabric. It would be hard to swim in.

I have worn swim suits with short skirts. the skirts float up so that the stomach and back then show. Keeping all that fabric from bunching up, etc would be a problem.

I don’t think a muslim coudl wear a scuba suit because it would display the figure… a huge no no

It was interesting. I have to admit it is admirable that Muslim women are trying to find ways to stay both active and modest.

The motivation was getting Muslim women involved with the Australian lifeguards to reduce the problem of friction between the two communities such as led to the Cronulla riots (which were due to Muslim men reacting to Australian women wearing bikinis). As such it doesn’t conform to Muslim standards of modesty really as it clings! Proper Muslim “modesty” is only served by something resembling a black marquee which has no vestige of style whatsoever (and total loss of face to face contact) - which is nothing to do with modesty and everything to do with the women being right hand possessions.

For what it’s worth, I got it. 🙂

Personally, I find it sad that many Christian women DO think dressing “modestly” to be more about keeping men from lusting than about their own self-respect and dignity.

Wow! I can’t believe this old thread is being revived.😛

I had to search and discover what montalban said. I believe everyone understood his irony, they were debating the meaning behind his words.

I, too, think that modesty should be about a woman’s self respect and dignity foremost. That doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t take men’s potential to lust into account though.

Some of these posts are scaring me. I understand the backlash against the extreme body exposure of modern fashions for women – I really do. But the “burkini” and the other outfits posted here are just plain scary!! Are these the best examples of what defines modest dress? How about just wearing a regular bathing suit that doesn’t have your backside and/or your chest hanging out? Why isn’t that modest enough anymore? Why are Christian women (who, by virtue of the fact that they actually THINK about modesty, are, you can bet, already dressing in a dignified way), actually considering extreme fashions of Muslim women?! It boggles the mind!

All I can say is … be careful. If we start defining degrees of modesty this way, it’s only a matter of time before we find it disrespectful to get a glimpse of a woman’s elbow or undignified to reveal the turn of an ankle.

I am uncertain why the post would frighten you. No one here is suggesting that to be a Christian you must dress a certain way.T Nor is anyone suggesting that if you don’t dress a certain way then you aren’t religious enough. I started the thread but I’d be offended if anyone here said that you HAD to dress a certain way.

I think that at one point in our society we had a common concept of modesty. Now, its left up to the individual. That isn’t automatically bad, but it can be hard for those of us who are trying to be modest to know where the lines are drawn.

This is also an issue that women sometimes get very judgemental of one another. So, I can understand why it would be easy to assume that people are suggesting something that they might not be.

but eybrows are hair too. i think they’re inconsistent. and some muslims wear veils but some of the hair exposed. so they re not really clear as to what part should be covered.
 
I live in southern California. When at the beach I have noticed few females in actual bathing suits. Most walk on the beach or go in the water wearing short and a T-shirt. I think that’s pretty practical.
 
To the original post, the burkhinis from the site you linked are really nice, much nicer than some others I’ve seen. I wish I could afford the black one, they are far too expensive.😦
