Hi,
I am a teenage girl and my Religious Education class was assigned to help at Mass this past Sunday (we don’t have altar boys). At my parish, we have two candles that are on either side of the pulpit/ambo, which then get moved to either side of the altar after the Homily, during the preparation song. My friend and I were supposed to go get one candle each to move to either side of the altar. Here’s the issue: I picked the candle up, carried it over to the altar, and was trying to get it on its stand, but for some reason it wasn’t locking in. I think I had to push it down pretty hard in order to get it to fit on the stand. I probably should have been more careful with placing it on its stand, but it just wasn’t locking in… When I was finally able to push it down, THE CANDLE WENT OUT.
I got some wax on my shirt too. After my friend and I went back to our pew, I told my RE teacher and a woman who works at my parish that it went out, and they didn’t seem to think it was a big deal. After I got home, I did some research on the computer, and it seems like the candles are an important part of the Mass. I think my parish might only use those two candles for the altar candles, and it seems very important that there be at least 2 lit candles during the Mass. As far as I know, nobody relit the candle during Mass, so I think there was only one lit candle by the altar. I’m not sure if father even noticed it. I also told my mom about it, and she just thinks I’m being scrupulous (which I have a tendency towards) and she told me that it’s not a big deal. I am wondering if this in any way made the Mass illicit, or if this was a sin in any way on my part (and if so, mortal or venial). I have been feeling super bad about this, and even though it was just an accident, I probably should have been more careful with placing the candle on the stand. I can’t bear the thought that I messed up Holy Mass!
I’m not sure if this is just my scruples talking or if this is a bigger issue. Thank you for reading my post. I would really appreciate it if you could respond.
