Is anyone else here bothered by the fact that the priest reads the Canon of the Mass aloud? Sometimes I feel as if he’s reading to the congregation rather than praying to God even if I know the priest is very orthodox and I shouldn’t feel that way. I’ve only been to one Mass in Extraordinary Form, so while I do love that older use, I have very little experience with it and this topic comes from my own experience in Novus Ordo and Anglican Use parishes.
I am bothered by the fact that in the EF, the priest
doesn’t read the Canon out loud. I happen to think that the EF is beautiful and I really do love it, and wish I could love it
more, but I have several problems with it, this being one of them.
I agree with you, though, insofar as that when a priest reads the Canon to the people or seems to be, it both takes away from the objective reality that is going on and from the subjective experience of it. The Canon ought to be directed towards God. Celebrating
ad orientem could fix this. I have a very orthodox priest, who is a very priestly priest, and I am sure he is praying to God, but you’re right, it just doens’t seem that way.
That being said, I do have real problems with it being said silently. The people ought to hear what is being said to God on their behalf. For one, it helps them to appreciate the sacrifice that is going on. It also eliminates what I consider a very nasty sort of effect of the silent reading: the impression that the people
shouldn’t hear the Canon. It can feel like the priest is talking to God about things that really
are secrets, as if something shady is going on. This is the work of the salvation of the people… a work that ought to occur in the daylight, not the dark of night… it is something which is so intimately connected with the eternal destiny of the people that when it’s secret, it really can create various very unusual impressions.
It reminds me of gnosticism and the eastern mystery religions. It’s as if these offerings of Christ are secret and must be kept hidden… I really don’t like it.
Peace and God bless
