Trolls are not appreciated for their holiness, but because they are trolls. 😛 I think trolling stems from some sort of hatred or at least contempt for the view that is being presented which they desire to denigrate in some fashion.

Trolls can occasionally, very occasionally, be entertaining. Most of the time, what comes across is the hatred, which is just so un-Christian. To me, it’s a thinly veiled attempt to force their will on others. And, as the article and OP noted, it works. I have seen so many times it turned a productive group ( the old Use Net comes to mind) into a vast wasteland.

I am glad there are Moderators here on CAF who keep things more or less contained.

We are also blessed by some level headed posters here who can be counted on to provide a voice of reason.

Blessings,
Stephie

Yes, the moderators do a good job of keeping us wayward souls in line. Thanks moderator guys and gals. You are kind of like cops in a way, under appreciated but very much needed!!

Have you ever seen the Matrix or Men in Black,…anyways, it makes me think we might need something like Troll Hunters to seek out and REFORM or ummm… “do something else” with all those trolls out there in the Universe. 🙂 I wonder how many there are? 🤷

Trolls are harmless…What is harmful, is those who react to them. Its impossible to block entry of trolls, but it is up to us as individuals not to encourage or enable them by falling prey to their games.

But how do we know that you are not a mole? :knight2:

They use your blog as a platform from which to broadcast their opinion, or their hatred, or whatever they want to broadcast. If your blog is popular, you are actually assisting them in getting their “message” out to all the readers you want to be listening to you. You are undercutting your own endeavor.

I honestly don’t know much about it, but it seems the optimal thing to do is be able to delete out stupid and unhelpful comments if it is your blog or whatever. Likely some will cry censorship but seems like the best way to me.

blogs are platform in themselves…why should my blog be more valuable than someone else’s?..I really think its a humility thing…the troll and the blog owner themselves are feeding off each others fragile, yet overinflated egos…if trolls are that detrimental to the purpose of the blog, they there should not be a dialogue box for comments…that’s what I miss about old school communications…a writer had one shot to convince, inform, or entertain his targeted audience, and if he succeeded his column continued in print, if he didn’t the market would drive him into another occupation…e-commerce has given everyone a platform, but the only requirement is a computer and access to the net…and that hardly makes them an expert on anything they blog about.

The study mentioned in the article said that even the troll comments by themselves changed the way that people perceived an original news piece. Their use of strong language tended to drive people further to the poles in their opinions regarding the original article.

I’m no expert on sophistry, but often he who has the last word has something of an advantage over his adversary, but his can be overcome by a very strong counter-argument. The weak-minded are more prey to the “troll” than others, but what did Jesus say about people who cause others to stumble…

There is a particular blog I can think of where one of the commenters is considered almost universally to be a troll. The blog owner allows the troll’s comments up to a point because I think he sees it as helpful to have someone who slightly provokes readers and/or because he can be humorous; however, the troll generally goes way too far and people get angry and resort to personal attacks, lose the thread of the blog entirely, or just leave the conversation altogether out of frustration. Sometimes the troll is called out by the blog owner, who then becomes a hero in the eyes of readers as being a very fair and tolerant host. So I guess if you’re in control of the comments, monitor them, and delete those you don’t like, a troll can actually make your blog more interesting.
