Hi, I’m an 18 year old male and having trouble with controlling my urges but I want to do something to be a better Catholic. Any suggestions, especially from another guy, on how to deal with it? Thank you, god bless you.

Hello, I would suggest that you do a search of the forums on this topic as we seem to get this same question about once a week and there are many past threads that may help you.
God bless.

I can’t pretend to be a poster boy for success, but I do have the advice I have been given.

A common tool I hear is to exercise when you get the urge. Go for a walk, do whatever you can to separate yourself from the situation that’s resulting in your urge.

If you know what triggers you, avoid it.

Pray.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

The few times I’ve tried the exercise advice it has worked well for me. I need to do it more often

This is the greatest scourge of my life. Sometimes I try to minimalize it or pretend that it’s not really sin. But if it’s not sin, why do I feel so guilty about it - especially as a married man? I don’t have any advice to offer except perseverance and prayer.

I absolutely hate the fact that I do it. Despite my best efforts, I continue to fail. It is my thorn in the flesh - an angel of Satan - that God allows to prevent me from getting too proud (paraphrased badly from St. Paul).

Amongst other things, also take a step back from this particular issue and take a look at the bigger picture. What God is calling us to is holiness in every area of our lives, even in our sexuality. This sin is only one aspect of sexual holiness. Pray for greater holiness in this area of your life and don’t get discouraged if you fail a lot. Resolve to never give up the pursuit of holiness in this part of your life - even if it takes years. Keep putting in effort, but also never forget that his forgiveness is inexhaustible.

Also I totally recommend resources from chastity project - superb info.

Make the rosary part of your day EVERY day. Never quit trying! Immerse yourself in deepening your faith through Catholic readings and videos. My personal preference is to “devour” as much as I can learn about Our Lady of Fatima and the visionaries.

“No one can live continually in sin and continue to say the Rosary: either they will give up sin or they will give up the Rosary”~Bishop Hugh Doyle

I hope that you will not give up the Rosary!

I definitely won’t give up. Chastity project also seems like it could be useful. Thank you and god bless you.

This may take some radical change in your life for a time. Something triggers your urge. Web, cable, magazines - whatever.
Cut it out. Disconnect from it. Study and practice the custody of the eyes.

A gun will not fire without a trigger. Remove the trigger.

Mortification. To truly conquer this sin, some form of mortification is necessary; but how exactly that manifests is unique to the individual. Find a good spiritual director to guide you.

Hello, dear brother.

It is a problem I, and many others I think, have. I have failed many times, but I won’t give up.

My advice is perseverance, prayer and firmness to avoid sin and pursue good. These 3 things ought to be done, even though we fail in them many times, I know I do.

But, we must remember, we must run this race that is set before. No excuses for sin. Sin is our enemy, and the Devil is our enemy. Let us pursue good and love, and live in Christ and for Christ. Remember: faith, hope and love. This is what we must have.

Let us not give up or be discouraged, let us fight this fight, and do all for God’s glory through God’s power and guidance.

Peace! Christ loved us and didn’t give up on us. He went to the end, even to the death of the cross. Let us also love Him and others, and let us persevere to the end.
