I know that the Protestant Reformers obviously disagreed with some of the books that were in the Bible, for example ’ Macabees and Tobit’. Does anyone have any information or know of any tapes or cds that explains about this topic? Becuase my Protestant boyfriend’s Pastor told him that Catholics ‘added’ these books and the people who added them weren’t even disciples and he said that if he finds out that the Protestants are the ones that took away books then it would really open his eyes. I have been searching to find a good cd that we could listen to that explains it in the Catholic Perspective. So does anyone know of a Catholic Convert that explains this?

Thanks,

You've come to the right place. I would recommend you watch the two-part series, "Origin of the Bible" at the following link:

 [alabamacatholicresources.com/Bible.html](http://www.alabamacatholicresources.com/Bible.html)

Just a quick note, during Jesus' time, there were actually two versions of the Jewish Scriptures, the Hebrew version and the Septuagent version. The latter was created because there were many Jews living in Alexandria, Egypt who spoke only Greek. So, they translated the Hebrew into Greek. The Jews did not establish a formal canon for their Scriptures until the late first, early second century. When they did so, they rejected the Septuagent, mostly because the Jews who converted to Christianity were using the Septuagent to convert Jews. And, they didn't like that. The Catholic Church, however, used the Septuagent because approximately 80% of direct and indirect references to the Jewish Scriptures in the New Testament are from the Septuagent. Evidently, that's the version that Jesus and the Apostles used. When Martin Luther, an ex-Catholic priest and monk, came along, he decided to use the Hebrew version because it left out the books that supported things he didn't agree with, such as Purgatory.
Anyway, enjoy the videos. 🙂

Hi what a good question!

A lot of issues came to light and taught me a great deal when I began to watch the Jeff Cavins dvds on Bible Timeline at our bible study. It would be very instructional to you and your boyfriend to view them together if you can. It would be even better to get a bible study going at your church using these dvds.

Jeff Cavins explains in the first dvd how these books are relevant.

Cavins is a former Protestant minister who converted to Catholicism after having spent a great deal of time in study. He apparently speaks, and read Hebrew and understands how the OT and NT are interwoven.

He covers the 12 narrative books of the bible and includes a lot of history.🙂

I know of no better source on this subject than Gary Michuta’s Why Catholic Bibles Are Bigger. It is a great reference showing how the early Church viewed and sorted the books of Scripture out. In my opinion, it is one of the, if not the most important apologetic book of the 21st century so far. :o

Thank you everyone for your replies. They helped out alot and I will be sure to look into everything!!
