I often listen to Catholic radio when I commute. For years it’s just been my local Catholic radio channel, which carries Catholic Answers and EWTN produced programs.

Recently, I got satellite radio and with it, The Catholic Channel. I was excited about the potential for more programs up my alley. But I’ve found that I’m now almost completely back to my local Catholic radio station. I think it’s because the shows I’ve heard so far haven’t been of the type I enjoy. I’m more interested in shows like Open Line or Catholic Answers Live than The Catholic Guy or Busted Halo. Is there anything like those programs on The Catholic Channel?

I have Sirius too. I don’t think much of the programming on TCC. My experience has been that they try TOO hard to be funny. I have not listened much.

Get the Relevant Radio Ap for your smartphone or listen to it on the internet if you do not have a local station. I’m a huge supporter.

Thanks for the recommendation, I will look into that. Any shows in particular on that that you recommend?

Ooooh, I love Relevant Radio, too. My favorite show is Go Ask Your Father, but I also like Father Simon Says. 🙂

Yeah, I find the Catholic Channel to be silly and uninspiring. Pretty dull stuff. More about the personalities and their inside jokes than illuminating the faith for listeners.
I’ll check out Relevant Radio, thank you.

Everyone is free to like what they like. I’m glad The Catholic Channel exists. They are reaching an audience that other stations have been unable to touch.

To be clear, I didn’t create this thread to criticize The Catholic Channel, but to inquire about its programming offerings. While I’ve found that the programs that are on during my regular commute hours aren’t my cup of tea, I would love to hear about other shows that they offer, especially if there are any along the lines of Catholic Answers Live or Open Line.

I know.

I was just noting that TCC really doesn’t really doesn’t seem like it’s meant to compare/compete with EWTN or Relevent Radio. They serve two different purposes so you can’t really project the expectations from one on to the other.

I don’t have a satellite radio. I only listen to the shows in podcast form so I’m not tuning in every day and listening to every show. To the best of my knowledge there is no dedicated Q&A type show on TCC. But some of the shows like Busted Halo do have a Q&A segment.

A lot of TCC programming is more for entertainment than educational value. This isn’t a bad thing especially if viewed as outreach to those Catholics or Catholic-curious that would never listen to EWTN.

However, if you like programs like Open Line, you might like the TCC program “Conversations with a Cardinal”. Cardinal Dolan answers emails and talks about what it going on in the Church. There is a new program called “News and Views” which I don’t recommend but which has a call-in segment. The host of that show expresses some very un-Catholic views at times so I don’t stay tuned for long but he has had some interesting guests. There is also a great show on Fridays, “Word to Life” which previews the scripture readings for the upcoming Sunday and discusses them. Another education-type show is Sr. Marie Pappas’ show “Pathways of Learning”. Her focus is Catholic education, especially life-long learning and she often has authors on to discuss their books. In general, the more educational programming is in the middle of the day with the more entertainment style shows starting during east coast afternoon drive time.

I have been disappointed in The Catholic Channel lately as it seems like the catholic guy and busted halo are the only programs ever on ( and I do not care for either one)! Whatever happened to bob and sherri( I think that was their names?)? They had 5 children and had an afternoon program that I always liked.

Do you mean Greg and Jennifer Willits aka “The Catholics Next Door”? Greg took a job with an archdiocese working in media and evangelization. There is a Catholic Channel program that is very similar now, “Fired Up” with Mark and Melanie Hart (4 kids).

They also returned to their podcasting roots. They’re producing a weekly show online still called “The Catholics Next Door”. You lose some the interactivity since you no longer have the ability to call into a live show. But at least you can still hear them talk about family life.

Regarding Relevant Radio

I like their whole lineup, to be honest. I have the opportunity to listen a little bit in my office, and all the time in the car.

I’m a little partial because I have become friendly with Fr. Rocky Hoffman and Fr. Rich Simon. Fr. Bob Barron makes his contribution semi-weekly with Word on Fire.

Fr. Rocky lives in my neighborhood and the local studio is also nearby. He offers mass at our basilica every few months. He is a very charismatic guy and always on the go. Fr. Rich’s parish is St. Lambert’s which is ten minutes from my house. I attend mass there once or twice a month. His sense of humor and self -deprecating style, combined with his expertise in the liturgy, Greek and Latin, etc. make his bible studies world class.

So “Go ask your Father” and “Fr. Simon Says” are the shows that they host. With his schedule Fr. Rocky only does the show once a week. Msgr Stuart Swetland of Mt. St. Mary’s University is now the regular host. His style is unique as he is a former Navy officer and a convert from Lutheranism.

Oh, I didn’t realize the channel had a different programming theme/purpose. I just thought I was tuning in at the wrong times.

I love Fr. Barron, that’ exciting to know he’s got a weekly show!

I should have been more clear. His show is really a prerecorded segment–his homily on that Sunday’s readings, mixed in with current events when relevant. These are produced by Word on Fire, which you can also find on the internet.

Fr. Barron is also a frequent contributor as a guest of the other hosts on RR. He’s a busy guy.

I was a student of Fr. Simon’s when I was in the seminary, close to twenty years ago. His show is just like his classes were. A few of us wanted to major in Fr. Simon. 🙂 I actually called in a couple of days ago to ask if he thought if it was too late for me to return to seminary and he remembered me, which was nice.
