What is the Catholic Church s’ view of Islam–Muslims and the Koran? If a Muslim follows and adheres to the Koran they are totally intolerant of Christan faiths (calling us infidels). Why are we asked to understand their religion?

Are we asked to understand their religion? Where did you read this? Yes, learning about other religions can help to bolster your own faith, but understanding is different.

Why are we asked to understand their religion?
well one reason is Napoleon’s maxim: know thine enemy.
another reason to know Islam is to be able to evangelize, as every baptized Christian is called to do, which requires another POV altogether.
