since the magisterium speaks for the RCC, does anyone have any instances where the magisterium forbid the faithful from reading the bible?

the original question asked why the “catholic church” suppressed the bible. it did not ask if some catholics during the history of the RCC acted to suppress the bible.

in fact, the RCC through its magisterium did everything it could to make the contents of the bible known to its flock. that is the opposite of suppressing the bible.

furthermore, discouraging people from reading the bible is not the same thing as suppressing the bible. people would have to have access to the bible to be discouraged from reading it. suppression means restricting access.

as for anecdotal instances of being discouraged from reading the bible, the most important factor about these is that they cannot be placed in an accurate context. for all we know some of these stories might involve people misusing the bible specifically at that time.

finally, the bible is only a tool. it is the Gospel of Jesus Christ that saves and the bible is not needed to preach the Gospel. that is not to say it is a powerful and handy tool, just that it is that and only that one of many tools.

I respectfully disagree.

Peace!!!
You’re talking about those that follow a man that was the carpenter’s son. It’s unlikely many of the apostles were even literate but they were effective, not due to their education but by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Both Scott Hahn and Jimmy akin were educated as protestants along with scores of others that are now Catholic. They must have really paid attention at bible college.

Most protestant ministers of a church of any size, have at least a four year degree with seminary after. Many have completed doctorates.

I understand there are some protestant organizations that spend considerable resources spreading their misunderstanding. I’ve spent most my life in protestant churches and never once heard a sermon on what the Catholic Church does or does not believe. It must be rare.

In the independent churches I question the education of many of their ministers.

My second home was the mid-south .
The Anti-Catholic bias was clearly there. There was one Catholic Church in the county.
I heard it all.
In the Main Line denominations of the NorthEast I never ran into it.
Then by the time I came around Catholic populations had been their neighbors for years.
When you actually know someone it becomes harder to discriminate.

It’s still debated whether or not St. Peter could read or write. Do you question his education?

I’ve been in Georgia most of my 54 years and I’ve never heard anyone in a protestant church say anything bad about being Catholic.

No I was talking about your comment “condescension and pettiness”. I do not find this in JustaServant’s comment.

Peace!!!
