Hypothetical.

You are a Protestant who is time-warped to 1840, and you live on the prairie in some county that was settled by Catholics. (I said hypothetical 🙂 )

You are Protestant, but the Catholic church is the only church around.

What do you do? Go to the Catholic church and think what you want? Convert to Catholicism? Stay home?
 
1840…are catholics still bloodthirsty at that time? if so, i would go to church making them think i’m one of them. 😃

At first I’d certainly go, then I’d probably convert to be able to get the sacrament.
 
I’d set up a Friend’s Meeting and go from there:)

I’m sure on occasion I would attend, but the Latin would probably throw me a bit…if I don’t understand what is being spoken in the “verbal ministry”, I’m not sure it would do me much good. I can enter into the Presence anywhere. I’d be cordial…but keep my Quakerly ways.
 
All I can say is that I attended my kid’s 101 dalmations play at a large, supposedly prominent “bible church” a couple days ago, and was completely in shock, borderline catatonic. My wife told me that the play was in the same place where the congregation worships; it was not at all different from a high school auditorium. I just don’t understand the whole Protestant thing. I honestly believe this is one of the devil’s greatest deceptions, so many different churches around. At the moment I walked into that “auditorium”, I felt so satisfied being Catholic, knowing that I belong to the one true Church established by Christ…

If that “auditorium” was the only Church I had to go to, I know my faith wouldn’t be nearly what it is today…

I gauge the strength of my faith on how well I have conquered both mortal sin and habitual, venial sin. I can honestly say that I have a better handle on it now than I ever have. How does every one else gauge the strength of their faith?

Early Christians met in homes. I am assuming that they were Catholic.

If I were protestant I would stay home. In fact I would stay home in 2008. Why? It’s all about me and Jesus. My salvation is a personal thing which the community of belivers has no say. And since my communion is with the Spirit why is the church neccessary? He is just as present with me now as he could be in a place of worship.

Now IF this strange teaching about Jesus being Really, Truly, and Substanitally present Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity is true. Well then I got problems.👍

By just stepping through those glorious doors and adoring the presence of my Lord Jesus, I would know IMMEDIATELY that the Catholic Church is MY HOME!!

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you, save souls.
 
1840 wasn’t as bad as 1710. Slowly, it has leveled off.

Yes, the early Church did meet in homes, but that passed soon enough, especially once the Roman Persicutions ended.

I think that a better question is if you were in an area where only the Catholic Faith existed AND you could understand what was going on, what would you do? Had to add that for Publisher…

Since I don’t believe anything is ‘sacred’ about a church building or ‘sanctuary’ I could as easily “go into Meeting” at any location. I would have no problem attending a “meeting for worship” in another faith tradition. Since I wouldn’t be baptized with water nor a confirmed memeber of the CC, I wouldn’t participate in the “outwards forms”…so I probably would practice the “sacraments” I believe truly hold value…I would find a family in need of bread in that community and serve them who wear the face of Jesus. I hope I would find the children in that communtiy who needed clothing and “cloth the Body of Christ”.

I would invite those in my community to “go into Meeting” with me and seek to receive “verbal ministry” from them and offer them “verbal ministry” as moved by the Spirit. The Church isn’t a building made of stone and mortar, but made of flesh and blood.

The Real Presence is made known where two or three are gathered together, so the Real Presence would be found whereever the Church was gathered…in the small Meeting House I hope we would build or the building those of Catholic persuasion would meet in…“He is present among us to teach His people Himself.” It is not our religious affiliation that makes us “Christian” but the work and movement of the Holy Spirit within us that “births us anew.”

There would be much to do in a new community…no doubt if this Friend was there…other Friends would follow…we tend to move where we have Friends…as with others who live in community with Christ, we tend to gather with one another…and if there aren’t any Friends where we’re at…we share what we have to offer to those hungry and thirsty for not only material necessities…but those things of the Spirit.

I doubt if I’d be the only Friend for too long.

Weren’t the Catholics a minority on the ‘‘prairies’’? Not being an American I wouldn’t know. But if John Wayne movies are to be believed it was a war of the WASPs vs anything that moved.
 
Assuming I was more or less the way I am now. I’d probably join the CC study for a long time get fed up some some issues and pull a Martin Luther to some degree.

Rare, but not unheard of. There were always Mexicans in the southwest, and the Black Robes, as Jesuits became known, did wander the west. By and large, it was Protestants who pushed west first. We let them bear the brunt of the fight 😃
