"The Catholic Church Was Built On A Lie"

I read that somewhere and the person sited this as his reason.

Now, I don’t quite understand what was meant. Can someone explain the reason for that statement and offer a rebuttal? I especially don’t understand how the Church could be ‘based on a lie’ if the document/event in question took place after the Church’s formation.

I apologize if this is in the wrong section, but non of the others seemed appropriate.

If the Church was built on this lie . . . how was it that the Church was in existence to perpetuate said lie? That doesn’t make much sense to me.

Perhaps he was trying to say the Catholic Church as it exists today is built on a lie? That doesn’t seem to make sense either, since the Donation was used in national politics that the Church hasn’t had anything to do with since the fall of the Papal States.

I think this is a east vs west argument, but I could be wrong. I see it come up from time to time when I search Eastern Orthodoxy topics. It seems to be a point of “proof” for some that the Catholic Church erred.

I dismiss it as a silly objection and streching.

This webpage is a response to another one located at: ***/forgeries.html written by William Webster. I was pointed to Webster’s website by James White (Alpha and Omega Ministries) who challenged me on a document known as “The Donation of Constantine” (Donatio Constantini) and another known as the Psuedo-Isidorian Decretals (or False Decretals). They were alleged to be given by the Emperor Constantine to Pope Sylvester I (314-35). The document is without a doubt a forgery, being written somewhere between 750 and 850 A.D.
