Mister, you’re getting sharper and sharper at clarifying Catholic matters!

Ah luv it! Uhm…not that my opinion matters, of course.

Well, it matters to ME, since that is the point of my being here! 😃

My separated brethren sharpen me greately.

I don’t belong to a denomination, I belong to the RCC. How about you?
Why did you say “RCC”?

“Roman Catholic Church” is actually a slangname.

The real name is “the Catholic Church”, the “One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church”, or simply, “The Church”.

Yep.

You’re using a false dichotomy.

The Roman Catholic Church and the Catholic Church are one and the same.

If that bothers you, you can always put me on your Ignore List. (Personally, I hope you won’t.)

BTW, Matariel, could you be so kind as to tell me whom you were referring to, in post #408, when you said: “Notice they define themselve by what they are not. Anything but those danged Catholics!” (To all appearances, you were talking about nbtb1348 and myself.)

It bothers me because it fails to acknowledge the true Catholicity of the Church, and relegates the 22 Catholic Rites in communion with the Bishop of Rome who are not “Roman” to non-existence.

Actually there are 22 Eastern Catholic Churches, not 22 Eastern Catholic Rites. You’d better double check your sources on that.

But I definitely agree with you that the 22 Eastern Catholic Churches should not be relegated to non-existence.

I don’t have time to go looking but I seem to recall that earlier on this thread there were postings explaining that it was the Anglicans who first called us Roman Catholics. I have never understood or been comfortable with the name. I have always said I was Catholic. The fact that the Vatican is in Rome doesn’t make us Roman Catholics.

I have found the posting to which I refer above.

No… The Roman Catholic Church was, as you say, invented by man… But which men? Actually the term was invented by the Anglican, as you should know. It was used in a derogatory remark. The actual way to identify what you are referring to as the “Roman Catholic Church” is most likely the Latin Rite of the Catholic Church. The official name is not really official but it is known mostly as the Church of Christ or the Catholic Church. The word “Roman” really identifies all Catholics that are in union with the Bishop of Rome. You should already know this. I’ve gone through great lengths to learn this and have verified it over and over. As a former Catholic SIA you should already know this but maybe you’ve been gone too long. Thinking about swimming the Tiber back soon?

But this is the reason I hate the term “Roman” in Catholic Church. It offends me even though many Catholics use it unknowingly.

From Wikipedia:
The Roman Catholic Church, officially known as the Catholic Church,[note 1] is the world’s largest and oldest Christian Church, representing over half of all Christians and one-sixth of the world’s population.[6][7] The Catholic Church is a communion of 23 sui juris particular churches. Among these are the Western Rite (Latin Rite) and Eastern Catholic Churches comprising 2,782 dioceses. The Church’s highest earthly authority in matters of faith, morality and Church governance is the pope,[8] currently Pope Benedict XVI who holds supreme authority over the Church in concert with the College of Bishops, of which he is the head.[9][10][11] The community is made up of an ordained ministry and the laity; members of either group may belong to organized religious communities.[12]
The Catholic Church defines its mission as spreading the message of Jesus Christ, administering the sacraments and exercising charity.
Colouration is mine. The official name of the Church is the Catholic Church.

I guess you’re ignoring me now (or at least, selectively ignoring me) so I won’t bother you again. Thank you for your time.

Oh, no!

I’m sorry, I completely missed that post! I have a slow computer so it takes some time to get around all these threads.

I wasn’t ignoring you, and no, I was referring to Ntb and NonCatholic, not you Peter J.

No problem.

Alright, although in that case you might want to go back and re-read. Not that it really matters to me anyhow, just curiosity … or rather, curiosity plus the fact that I perfer to part on amiable terms whenever possible. 🙂

Take care,

Catholic means universal church which is one body. Roman catholic is to specify the faith of the pope being the successor of the apostle Peter aka the first pope who was crucified in rome.

The official name of the Church is The Catholic Church.

You obviously have not read all the other postings in this thread.

🙂

Hi jake23,

If I may add to what Cinette has already posted, if you go to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_Catholic_Church you’ll read (emphasis added):
The Roman Catholic Church, officially known as the Catholic Church,[note 1] is the world’s largest Christian church, representing over half of all Christians and one-sixth of the world’s population.
It’s also worth observing this note at the top of the page:
“Catholic Church” redirects here. For other uses, see Catholic Church (disambiguation).

“ROMAN” now defines us.

There are many who claim they’re “catholic” but do not accept what The Roman Catholic Church professes! Indeed, many Christian churches recite The Creed with confidence as long as ‘Catholic’ has a small “c”!

“Roman” means acceptance that the Seat of Catholicism is in Rome!

Wherever you are in the world, when you claim that you are Roman Catholic, the hearer infers that you follow The Pope, which is entirely, ACCURATE!

You probably have a point. Perception is it!

I for one have never been comfortable identifying myself as a Roman Catholic - I say I am Catholic. Roman to me restricts - Catholic is what it implies - universal.

🙂
