The Lateran Pacts, which established the Vatican state, were signed in 1929. The Catholic Encyclopedia most of us are familiar with was published 15-20 years earlier. So no, the quote wouldn’t be in The (Old/Original) Catholic Encyclopedia.

However, I googled the phrase you quoted and found one person who also used the quote, citing this source:

Obviously, quite less authoritative. The person also claimed the book has a Nihil Obstat and an Imprimatur, which I can’t confirm. However, those things don’t mean the book is factually correct. Only that it doesn’t violate the Catholic faith.

Also, I can’t confirm whether the quote you mentioned actually appears in the book.

I have no idea where they got the quote, but the information contained therein is woefully misleading because it suggests that the Vatican is surrounded by the seven hills.

It is true that Vatican City is surrounded by the modern city of Rome, Italy. Vatican City is, however, a separate city from Rome, and indeed a separate nation from Italy. Vatican City is named after “Mons Vaticanus,” a hill is on the west side of the Tiber River, while all of the famous “seven hills” are on the east side of the river. It’s on the east side, opposite the Vatican, that one finds the Colosseum, Forum, Pantheon, Imperial Palace, Circus Maximus, and whatnot.

As far as I can tell, the popular term “swimming the Tiber” was originally a geographically-based metaphor suggesting that a person crosses from paganism (represented by classical Rome) to Christianity (represented by St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City) through the waters of baptism (represented by the Tiber River).

By the way, the entire old Catholic Encyclopedia is Google-searchable at newadvent.org. I ran the phrases “called The City on Seven Hills” and “Vatican State proper,” and there were zero results. Neither phrase appears in the old Catholic Encyclopedia. But Dale has already established that it could not have appeared there.

I picked this up on another previous thread in the Forum, but it makes no references to any authority from which they get their claim.

CLAIM 5: The Antichrist is a church built on seven hills, which is Rome and so is the Catholic Church.

OBJECTION: The seven hills of Rome are: Quirinal, Viminal, Capitoline, Esquiline, Palatine, Coelian, Aventine. Vatican City is named for the only hill on which it is built - the Vatican. It’s not part of the Rome that John understood and the reference, if it were to the Vatican, would be lost on his audience. The seven hills refer to the pagan Roman Empire that was situated there.
