Since we Catholics have the Catholic League and other organizations that defend our church and the Catholic faith, what do Protestants have to defend their churches and their faith?
Not to mention the Knights of Columbus with millions of the faithful who belong to this great organization and many, many others.

Since we Catholics have the Catholic League
If I were Catholic, I’d just as soon not be “defended” by the likes of the Catholic League. Why do you think that we would want such an organization speaking for us? I find most of the things said by the Catholic League to be embarrassing.

Insofar as Protestants of various sorts engage in the same kind of “advocacy,” I blush. And they often do, but at least there isn’t one organization that claims to speak for us all, so we can hide behind that. But still, when folks like James Dobson claim to speak for evangelicals, or when (more legitimately and hence more embarrassingly) Presiding Bishop Katherine Jefferts-Schori says triumphalistic things about how smart and sophisticated Episcopalians are, I want to go hide under a very large sofa.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. The idea that “men” defend the Church strikes me as silly. The best defense Catholics (or Protestants) have for their Church (if indeed there even be two) is the lives of those Christians who live out Christ’s love in humble obediance to the Word of God. Leave the rest to God. He’s better qualified to defend His Church.

The Catholic League has bothered me more than once. However, I do think that there is a time and place for Christians to take up the banner and confront evil acts head on. Too many problems in the world today are because we did nothing but sit and wait.

Take the gay pride days in San Francisco. Even if you hate the Catholic Church, you cannot tell me that you like seeing JEsus portraid as a homosexual and the Last Supper as an orgy. Someone has to stand up to them.

How so? The Church is constantly under persecution (both physically and spiritually). This would make no sense in the formal context of Scripture:
For our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens. Eph. 6: 12

I agree that the Church is under persecution. However, I don’t think that what most people consider “defending” the Church actually constitutes much of a defense. In fact, I think that many defenders of the Church, however well intentioned they may be, do far more harm than good.

In terms of defense against man, I stand by my original post. You do not effectively defend the Church by debate, argument, responding to slurs on the Church etc. Instead, I believe that the life you live is the best possible response.

In terms of defense against satan and his minions, I leave that to God. He’s far better equiped to defend His Church than I am.

I live in the Bay area and went to grad school in SF. Many things about San Francisco sickened me. I agree that the “sisters of perpetual indulgence” and other such freak shows are offensive. Moreover, I think the participants intend to give offense. I just don’t know how to confront them in a way that advances Christ’s Kingdom.

Me either. Calling attention to the depravity is a good way to start, I think.
The Alabamian in me says a baseball bat, but that is too Old Testement…😛

The Marine in me says a baseball bat. That’s actually the reason for my last sentence. I think those sentiments derive from my sinful nature, not the part of me trying to serve the Lord.

Well, we agree on both points.

Sometimes, though, rightous indignation is not uncalled for. Someone once use a whip to clean out a house of God…I just can’t recall the whole story 😃

The key is that we should not be violent as a solution or as a first choice. We do not have to let ourselves be walked all over, though.

Personally, I have no problems with the Catholic League. One does not have to agree 110% to agree with some one. The Catholic League serves its purpose, and I wish them well. I support their work and hope they get more strident in their actions. Too many “Catholics” are wimps…and far to reticent to step forward and defend their faith against the onslaught of attacks against the Church that Christ established.

Many here on these forums have little problem declaring that Christ Himself established the Catholic Church and gave Peter the Keys… but it would seem that those same people have some problems standing up and being counted when push comes to shove.

No-one is perfect in this world. Only Christ was…so when it comes to an organization whose sole goal is to defend the Catholic faith…be not bashful to support or participate. If you have a problems with them…communicate with them. Be heard.

Given that “Anti-Catholicism” is the last acceptable prejudice and books have been written to that effect. If you want to be a wimp or milquetoast… knock your self out. I choose not to be. I will defend my faith even to the point of martyrdom. I have no problem with that. I hope and pray that those of you that read this do not either.

The following is a link from the Catholic League’s website. I have to ask… How would any Catholic have a problem with this article or the League:

catholicleague.org/catalyst.php?year=2008&month=September&read=2457

Perhaps more Catholics should be more familiar with the League and involved…

And, those of you who seek to ardently defend the Church against the slanderous attacks of defamers of the Church… will find much information of an apologetic nature as well as historical information to refute the lies and slander leveled against the Church…

Peace!!

Indeed. However, I don’t claim that level of wisdom or rightousness.

**Thank God we have the Catholic League, and why would people here WHO ARE NOT CATHOLIC are the only ones bashing this great organization? How would you know anything about them? This is what I mean people, too many non-Catholic Christians always ready to put down something good, and it isn’t even their religion.
The Catholic League is nothing to be embarrassed about. They are the only one’s that report people who defame Christ and bash the Catholic faith. Something wrong with that?
Furthermore, they e-mail those responsible for these bashings and these people have apologized on national t.v. Without this League, there would be more anti-Catholics getting away with murder than ever. Good for you Mr. Donahue 👍 **

Just so you will know, I am Catholic and I do ahve issues with the Catholic League at times. They can be disrespectful, condecending, argumentative, confrontational, and, at times, rude. I have seen interviews where the only purpose Mr. Donahue seems to have is to start a shouting match.

This does not mean that they are not needed. And, before you start, this does not make me a bad Catholic.

Maybe to YOU they are rude, but I thank God for them. They are right on top of things. Seems like you have a problem defending the church. If Mr. Donahue seems to be the way you describe him, it is because he is ticked off with these anti-Catholic bigots and I don’t blame him one bit. They are worse on the other side.

BTW, I can see Protestants don’t have any organizations to defend their religion.

No, I have a problem with being a jerk. We can defend and still be charitable. There is no call for rudeness. If you want to be treated properly, you should extend the same to others.

Look, many people want others to respect Catholics. Then, they turn around and call Protestants dumb, illogical, and whatever else. How can you justify this? It is the SAME as homosexuals making fun of us because we won’t allow them free reign in the Church to sin as they see fit.

Just because I will not tell TU that he is going to hell for being a Lutheran does not make me a bad Catholic. Just because I will not tell Reformed to shut the hell up with his reformed theology does not make me a bad Catholic. Just because I will not call Edwin an episcopalian liberal secular humanist does not make me a bad Catholic.

We are called to preach the truth with LOVE. When someone is mean, cold hearted, harsh, or just plain rude, they destroy the message that they profess. Bashing people upside the head does not create Christians. If you fight fire with fire, all you are left with is ashes.
