You’re wasting your time, Ralph. I hear you, tho.
I am not ready to give up.

CCF has a deep and true love of the Church. That cannot be denied. I admire that. However, that love should not create a hatred for everyone who does not have the same level of love or who does not express it in the same way.

God is Love, and God and Hate cannot exist in the same heart.

Personally, I have no problems with the Catholic League. One does not have to agree 110% to agree with some one.
And similarly, one does not have to “disagree 110%” to see an organization as being generally an embarrassment. I certainly agree that many of the things the League objects to are genuinely offensive. It’s just that they have a pattern of excessive, cynical, and sometimes downright irrational exploitation of the canons of political correctness in order to silence any criticism or unfavorable portrayal of Catholicism. Similar organizations speaking for other religious groups do the same thing–I don’t think the Catholic League is necessarily worse, but it happens to be the one under discussion here.
Too many “Catholics” are wimps…and far to reticent to step forward and defend their faith against the onslaught of attacks against the Church that Christ established.
Many here on these forums have little problem declaring that Christ Himself established the Catholic Church and gave Peter the Keys… but it would seem that those same people have some problems standing up and being counted when push comes to shove.
I would suggest that you have a thoroughly worldly and un-Christian understanding of what it means to “defend the faith” and to “stand up and be counted.” I do not think that we are called to defend the faith by reacting touchily to any negative comment or portrayal. We are called to defend the faith by proclaiming the truth and attacking error and evil of whatever kind. And we should be particularly sensitive to error and evil within our own ranks, and particularly tolerant of attacks that touch us personally or the group we represent. That is the Christian way of defending the Faith.

**Thank God we have the Catholic League, and why would people here WHO ARE NOT CATHOLIC are the only ones bashing this great organization? How would you know anything about them? **
Same way I know anything about anything. By reading.
Why on earth would you assume that a non-Catholic isn’t going to know anything about the Catholic League?
** The Catholic League is nothing to be embarrassed about. They are the only one’s that report people who defame Christ and bash the Catholic faith. Something wrong with that? **
Yes. Why are they “reporting” these things? (I don’t mean that people should keep them quiet–I’m only questioning the existence of an organization devoted primarily to “reporting” such things.) To whom are they reporting them? What does this accomplish? If the purpose is to try to shut down free speech, then this is very inappropriate behavior in a democratic society. Nor does this serve the Christian Faith in my opinion. If the purpose is to make Christians angry, why? Do anger and bitterness make us holier? Institutions like the Catholic League exist solely to stir up anger and a sense of defensiveness among their constituency. This is not a good thing from the point of view either of civil society or of the Church’s mission.
** Furthermore, they e-mail those responsible for these bashings and these people have apologized on national t.v. Without this League, there would be more anti-Catholics getting away with murder than ever. **
You don’t seriously mean this, I presume. You are using “murder” as a metaphor. And that’s the root of the problem with the Catholic League. You can with a straight face use the metaphor of murder to describe the exercise of free speech. And of course it’s not just Catholics doing this. Everyone in our society claims the right “not to be offended.” And of course people apologize, because offense against political correctness is one of the Deadly Sins in our culture. But Christians, particularly Catholics, ought to know better. These people are not apologizing because they think they are wrong–they are apologizing because they don’t want to be seen as “intolerant.” So every time a critic of Christianity apologizes, the noose is fastened around our own necks. It makes it that much easier for secular society to silence Christians when *we *need to say things that are “intolerant.”

We need a vigorous debate in this society about what is true and good. Political correctness is stifling that debate. Any institution that promotes political correctness and stifles vigorous debate about the true and good is an enemy of truth and goodness.

In fact, I think that many defenders of the Church, however well intentioned they may be, do far more harm than good.
So stand idle? Is that the call of Jesus’ gospel? For us to take the gospel for ourselves and forget the neighboor?

I see your point of aggressively defending the faith when there is no real need for such a rebuke. But when someone comes to you with sincere questions or concerns, or when someone rebukes your faith knowing full well what you believe, you are just going to sit there and take it?

From what I’ve experienced. Protestants are more eager to stand in street corners and proclaim what they believe than Catholics are. They also happen to be more aggressive in attacking the Church than Catholics are willing to attack what Protestants believe.

Where is the line between agressively defending and being agessive?

Look at abortion. The Catholic Church has done a wonderful job of defending human life without being part of the problem. We can defend without being the attacker.

The question doesn’t make any sense. What the Catholic League does is not proclaiming the Gospel at all. It’s just politically correct whining such as comes from all sorts of real or alleged victims in our culture. It’s particularly inappropriate coming from a religious group, which naturally takes definite stands and thus is a legitimate target of criticism (you cannot equate criticism of a religious institution with specific teachings on matters of public importance with prejudice against an ethnic group).

Yes, if you are talking about fundamentalist Protestants. And that’s one of the biggest moral advantages Catholics have. Why on earth you want to throw it away is beyond me.

Edwin

Agreed. Abortion is one of those cases in which we cannot sit idle and let our society commit infanticide.

I agree completely with what the Church is doing, you cannot say that you believe in the gospel and do nothing about the current darkness.

My point on being aggressive was directly related to people who stand on street corners and ‘proclaim the gospel.’ You’ll do more harm than good if you do that.

True. Likewise, you can lose the message when you choose to shout down those opposed to you instead of dialog.

You people are so wrong about this organization, you are embarrassing yourself. They have fought to overturn verdicts, to ask for apologies from anti-Catholics like Bill Maher, now there is a jerk, they have gotten the word across that you CANNOT BASH CATHOLICISM AND GET AWAY WITH IT.
If it weren’t for them, they would still be selling the sculptures of The Blessed Mother having sex and of Jesus Christ’s genitals hanging out.
What is wrong with you people?? stand up for your faith and your church!! Contarini can say whatever he wants to, we defend the Catholic church and that’s that.

They have fought to overturn verdicts,
What verdicts? Were they unjust?
to ask for apologies from anti-Catholics like Bill Maher, now there is a jerk,
Very true. But there is no law against being a jerk. Do you want there to be? Or only a law against being an anti-Catholic jerk?
they have gotten the word across that you CANNOT BASH CATHOLICISM AND GET AWAY WITH IT.
If you think that Christians have a mission to make sure that people can’t bash us and get away with it, then you have a view of Christianity that is diametrically opposed to mine.

Edwin

No, I have a problem with being a jerk. We can defend and still be charitable. There is no call for rudeness. If you want to be treated properly, you should extend the same to others.

Look, many people want others to respect Catholics. Then, they turn around and call Protestants dumb, illogical, and whatever else. How can you justify this? It is the SAME as homosexuals making fun of us because we won’t allow them free reign in the Church to sin as they see fit.

Just because I will not tell TU that he is going to hell for being a Lutheran does not make me a bad Catholic. Just because I will not tell Reformed to shut the hell up with his reformed theology does not make me a bad Catholic. Just because I will not call Edwin an episcopalian liberal secular humanist does not make me a bad Catholic.

We are called to preach the truth with LOVE. When someone is mean, cold hearted, harsh, or just plain rude, they destroy the message that they profess. Bashing people upside the head does not create Christians. If you fight fire with fire, all you are left with is ashes.
Thank you , Ralph!

God Bless!

So you are a member of the Catholic League?

No one condones those activities. FOr the record, they have lost cases about those kinds of things, too. The issue at hand, for me at least, is not if someone should stand up to this kind of filth. No, the issue is the way it is done. There is a difference between defending the faith and being an attacker of others.

Amen. The ends do not justify the means - the means matter if one calls him- or herself Christian.

You obviously no little to nothing about the Catholic League and it’s efforts for stamping out anti-Catholics and their blasphemies against Jesus Christ. Shame on you as a Catholic for not standing up for your own.

I doubt very seriously that the Catholic league exists to “stamp out anti-Catholics.”

I’d like to see that in writing somewhere.

As a Methodist, I don’t expect you to understand. You need to see for yourself, then comment. www.catholicleague.com
As a Methodist, I fully understand. I am bound to respect the religious rights and practices of other faiths. From The Book of Discipline
Religious persecution has been common in the history of civilization. We urge policies and practices that ensure the right of every religious group to exercise its faith free from legal, political, or economic restrictions. We condemn all overt and covert forms of religious intolerance, being especially sensitive to their expression in media stereotyping. We assert the right of all religions and their adherents to freedom from legal, economic, and social discrimination. - Social Principles, Book of Discipline, United Methodist Church
As far as the link to the Catholic League - I read it before I posted above… and I agree 100% that the civil and religious rights of Catholics ought to be protected.

Now, I ask you again, re: the “stamping out” of anti-Catholics (your words): where is it in writing? I can’t find it anywhere on the Catholic League site.

Yea because common sense doesn’t say it all over the place…good grief. 🤷

You’re so abrasive you don’t even see your own poor wording. You would have us believe that the Catholic Leagues stamps out people! I was trying to point out that what you were saying was contrary to the ethics and goals of the Catholic League.

Good grief, yourself. :hmmm:

Quit lumping all non-Catholics together. And BTW… non-Catholic ≠ anti-Catholic.

Good grief… squared. :tsktsk:
