The Catholic-Orthodox Dialogue: Where does it truly stand at present?

Thanks for clarifying, Mardukm. I was slightly perplexed by the way you suddenly fell silent after your … I’m guessing, innocent mistake, the other day (see my earlier post, quoted below).

***That's a first. I've never been accused of proselytizing here before.*** All I do here is DEFEND the Catholic Faith and what I believe. I guess there's a fine line if one is zealous about it.:D(emphasis added)
I did not accuse you of proselytizing. (I did say that you believe that the Oriental Orthodox should come into communion with the Pope.)

This is where the dialogue truly stands today
Can you confirm this with a recent statement from a “BISHOP” of Constantinople or Russia? 🤷

This is the latest, otherwise its Benedict and Kirill attempting to speak in person without creating a further Christian disruption which is already chaotic world wide.

Benedicts book “Light of the World” summed up the 2010 dialogue with the East also. Which was discussed in depth here back then. Might want to search the forums with the search engine.

My Orthodox friend, and I are in the process of reading the book, “His Broken Body.” It covers the post-schism state; what issues still remain, preventing reunion between the two. The author did a recent interview surrounding his book. I found it interesting the points he made. But, my friend, and I are intrigued to see what more is needed, and what truly stands in the way.

Just watched it. I’d say that the worth of that video/podcast is greatly reduced by the fact that he focuses on extreme/fringe Catholics.
The more I focus on the latter, the easier it becomes for someone, on the fence - literally - jump to the other side. This goes for those in Orthodoxy as well.

Not only that. Seems to me the video was made by someone on the extreme/fringe of Orthodoxy too. I couldn’t take it and had to shut it off … if I want to listen to silly MP polemic, I’ll go to the source (of course I don’t and won’t but never mind that). 🤷

Haha. Yeah, I"m unfortunately familiar with that “Mist Anchorite” loser thanks to some of the extremely idiotic videos he’s made against the Armenians (haven’t they suffered enough? Sheesh), and I wouldn’t trust him to provide a sane, let alone accurate, view of anything. I guess if you’re looking for ignorant vitriol, you’ll find it in spades on Youtube.

Hey, look what came up on the second page of results for “Catholic” on Youtube! Muslims are just like Catholics, and Mormons, and they’re all going to hell! I bet you guys didn’t even know that! (Actually, nevermind, I kind of love this guy…he’s against OSAS and he has a bunch of crazy acronyms to remember his points against these religions like “BURP’N’JIG” and “CHRISTBITE” or something…I think I found a new friend today, guys. What’dya think? “I’m not against beheadings; I just want to behead evil people”)

Beware of Youtube.

Agreed. That was difficult to watch. The commentary and discussion below pretty much tells me all I need to know about the positions and thought of the person who made that video.

I think that guy needs to get back on his meds. That, or there is a very large village out there being deprived of its idiot.

Agreed - that really was not a useful reference. Perhaps we can stick to what the Churches actually say / think …

Ok- At the risk of having small stones thrown at me- What’s up with the foreskin? Does it have any grain of truth, that story? I’ve never heard of it in Catholicism before. Also, St. Catherine of Siena was an empress? 😃

He is so caught up with this foreskin, though. Plus the reformation was about the foreskin too?:rotfl:

Hahahahaha. Well put! 👍
Cheers. 😉

I try not to going around calling people an idiot, but that guy seems to fit the bill. Today for some reason, I seem to have a lower than normal tolerance for BS. I think I am tensed up about the US embassies, the bomb threats in Texas and South Dakota, and the upcoming election.

One more thing to bring up in confession…

Yeah well … that jerk does seems to be fixated on it. 🤷 A chacun son goût, I suppose. 😛

Anyway, I think I read something many years back about a medieval “devotion” having cropped-up in Europe (perhaps it was somewhere in France? I just don’t recall the specifics) about this. IIRC, it was one of those “local things” that arose out of illiterate ignorance and of course never had approval. Again, IIRC, I don’t think the practice survived. Did you try a google?

Edit: I just did a quick look. I know it’s wikipedia but it’s a start. 🙂

I hope you realized the video I posted was meant to be a joke 🤷

Indeed, when I referred to them as “extreme/fringe Catholics” I briefly wondered if I was actually thereby insulting the fringe. 😉

A question from the Peanut Gallery. 🍿

Have either of your Churches every attempted a similar dialogue/plans for reunification with the Non-Chalcedonian Churches?

Do you view the differences between yourselves to be Great Than or less Than your relationship with your Oriental Orthodox brethren?

Out of the three groups, the Eastern Orthodox and the Oriental Orthodox are considered to be the closest together. (Although, speaking as a Catholic, I consider the Eastern Orthodox to be slightly closer to us than the Oriental (Non-Chalcedonian) Orthodox are.)
