The sacramental ministry is most different from Mormon priesthood. Holy Orders is a sacrament in itself. The Latin rite will always be celibate…if I haven’t said that before…

Sounds good pinay. God bless

The Priest hood is all bout administering the Most Holy Communion. About Confession of our sins in order for this Holy meal to be what it can to be. We have to approach Jesus with empty hands in order for him to be able to embrace them.

Here is another gem found.

Hiya catholic-rcia. Haven’t had a chance to see this video, but I will tonite before I go to bed.

Yes, I understand the power of the priesthood. It is the same in Catholic and LDS. The priesthood is the power and authority to administer the sacraments and ordinances of the gospel.

God bless!

Hi catholic-rcia! I was able to play the video from my phone (what a wonderful thing this technology is) while waiting for the kids to get out of school. This is the conversion story right (not sure if my phone pulled the right video since I had to type those crazy letters on the url)?

Very inspiring video! Thanks! The Holy Spirit is testament that there is nothing impossible with God.

Peace.

P.S. I’m not sure why this is titled … for the LDS…

Fr. Carapi is quite a speaker…and I do believe in his moment of personal transformation. What he describes is, when experienced by a Mormon, most usually dismissed as ‘warm fuzzies’ and ‘just feelings’ and mocked.

He also describes the idea of the priesthood and how it works very well. Especially when he said that he wasn’t the person absolving sins and saying 'I absolve you," but that Jesus was speaking through him…because that’s what the priesthood IS- that authority to speak for Jesus.

The Catholic priesthood, I believe, is also very real; only Catholic priests have the authority to do things for, and in behalf of, the church.

The problem, however, is this: as inspiring as he is, and I do believe he is very sincere and his faith is very strong…he doesn’t have the authority to baptize or confirm—or to absolve sins.

Nonsense. At least about Fr. Corapi’s authority as a priest.

On the contrary, Fr. Corapi has just that authority. He can baptize, he can confirm, and he can absolve sins, in his role as someone acting on the part of Jesus. Jesus is the “High Priest”. In fact everything done in His name is done by Him. Priests such as Fr. Corapi will freely admit that they are merely acting on behalf of Jesus, and I have heard him say so in so many words. It is, in the end, Jesus who baptizes, Jesus who confirms, Jesus who (this was left out, interestingly, in the list of things that Fr. Corapi supposedly could not do!) consecrates the elements of the Eucharist, and Jesus who absolves the sins of the penitent.

Why does Fr. Corapi have this authority? Because he was ordained a priest by Pope John Paul II, and, through that sacrament, going back in time to Jesus, through the Apostolic Succession, something that most faiths cannot even pretend to possess. Including Mormonism. No faith, including Mormonism can claim an unbroken Apostolic line of succession back to Jesus, no matter how they might wish to do so.

Without a valid Priesthood, there are no valid sacraments. The Catholic Church has 7 sacraments. Most sects claim to have 2 ~ baptism and confirmation ~ but without Apostolic Succession none of these claims are valid. Hence there are no valid sacraments, regardless of form and matter, outside the Catholic church.

And here you have the reason you are Catholic and I am LDS. I’m very aware that you believe Fr. Corapi has this authority for the reasons you claim he has it. For this reason, you are Catholic.

I do not believe it. I am LDS. I believe we have it for the reasons we claim. This isn’t an insult to Catholicism; it’s simply a statement of fact. You believe Catholics have it. We believe we do.

It isn’t a problem, because he has that authority.

About 4 months ago I went on a retreat with 10 others to the Abby of the Holy Trinity in Northern Utah. The next morning we all went to Confession. The priest I went to Father Pat is seen here. He is a Trappist Monk. My favorite priest.
http://www.holytrinityabbey.org/store.html

Are you telling me that my sins I confessed were not forgiven by Jesus because Father Pat has not the authority to help administer this kind of love? When I walked out I felt 100% that my sins were forgiven.

Before Easter my wife and I stood in the same line of Confession together, the same line our priest stands in. after we had confessed we went into the Chapel together to pray, we even mixed our tears together out of joy.

Are you telling me our sins were not forgiven because our Priest has not the authority to joyfully pass on such love form Jesus? The kind of love that sets you free? The kind of love that binds relationships such as my wife and I? What kind of God would set up such a Sacrament of love, the Sacrament of Confession for His church knowing that we will all at times have failures of faith only to deny it from Sinners? Because we have sinned? That doe not make any sense does it? Take it away for 17 or 18 hundred years. Personally if I did not have the Sacrament of Confession I would be in darkness. That would be darkness.

You can point to Catholic sin through the ages but how many have gone to the Sacrament of Confession because of this sin great or small? You can point your finger at Saint Peter in that He denied Jesus three times as He went to be crucified. Will you also point to the time Jesus was with Him after He was resurrected, when He forgave Peter and Peter accepted this forgiveness? You can point at failures within the Church such as Peter’s failure but are you willing to accept the forgiveness along with all of the Good fruit it produces because of Jesus? You are pointing to many sinners who have been forgiven.

Unknow Author for the following: “The Catholic Church believes that “Only God forgives sin.”

When a penitent person asks God for forgiveness, his (or her) sins are immediately forgiven.

Catholics also believe that when someone sins they not only hurt their relationship with God, they also injure the entire church, the body of Christ.

Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” (John 20:21-23)

Several important things are happening here all at once and within the same context:
• “As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” God the Father sent Christ to us for many reasons, one of which was to forgive our sins, so Christ sends the Apostles and their successors to, among other things, forgive our sins.
• Jesus, God the Son, “breathes” on the Apostles. The only other moment in Holy Scripture where God breathes on humanity is in Genesis 2:7, when the Lord “breathes” divine life into man. When God breathes on humans significant things happen.
• And then and only then Jesus says, “Receive the holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.”

Jesus says this a bit differently in Matthew 16:19: “I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

Oral confessing of sins is recommended over and over in both the Old and New Testaments:
• James 5:16
• Acts 19:18
• Matthew 3:5-6
• Mark 1:5
• 1 Timothy 6:12
• 1 John 1:9
• Numbers 5:6-7
• Nehemiah 9:2
• Sirach 4:26

The Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation with a priest ordained in the name of Jesus Christ not only reconciles the sinner to God but with the entire church, including you and me.

Remember all sacraments are encounters with God. This sacrament is a healing encounter between God and the penitent.

You made me smile today, Rich! Thank you!

Okay, I think I get it now - this post is comparing the Priesthood authority of the Catholic church to the Priesthood authority of the LDS church. Sorry, I didn’t see that before. I just saw a Catholic video…

To tell you the truth, besides the Catholic priests being celibate, there’s not much difference between the two.

Who has the proper authority - nobody can tell you. You’ll have to figure that out for yourself. The Catholics may well have it, the LDS may well have it, Both may well have it, or NONE of them may well have it.

How do you know which one has it? That’s what we call FAITH, my friends. As long as you search diligently for the truth, then that’s all that’s important.

Obviously, Diana and I found our faith in LDS priesthood. You find it in Catholic which is cool too. What is not cool is when somebody says, I have faith in ___ priesthood and hasn’t even studied to find out for himself instead of just following like lemmings and then goes out to do things against that priesthood.

P.S. My son is studying lemmings and he is upset that I use lemmings like it’s a bad thing. He thinks that lemmings following the herd off the cliff “seemingly” without much thought has a purpose and that it is the best way for it to survive. So, I have to add this caveat here. Because, somebody who is following the herd may “seemingly” be doing it without much thought, but it is actually for a bigger purpose that nobody else can seem to understand.

Okay, my son’s voice left my head now - my conscience is clear again. 🙂

Please read this for what it is, not what it is not. It is a statement of what I believe, not an insult to what you do.

If I thought that Father Pat had the authority to forgive your sins, then I would be Catholic. I absolutely respect that YOU believe this, and your faith is that you are behaving as if your sins have been forgiven, and you have a new chance to “be ye therefore perfect, even as your father in heaven is perfect.”

I believe, as you do, that the priesthood power is authority; the authority to administer sacraments and ordinances in the name of God and have them ‘stick.’ You believe that this priesthood authority resides in the Catholic church. I don’t.

However, if we are going to talk specifically about repentance, remember, as a Mormon I believe that repentance is ongoing, and the vast majority of sins one commits should be taken to God personally through prayer and honest, sincere repentance…and that as a Mormon I don’t believe that it is part of the priesthood authority to absolve people of their sins. That’s something Jesus does.

So it seems to me that if you sincerely repented, and you feel that Jesus forgave you, then that’s probably true. Please forgive me that I, as a Mormon, do not believe that Father Pat had anything to do with it. He may believe he did. You may believe he did, and I am in no way denigrating the faith of either one of you. However, again as a Mormon, I don’t believe he did.

Jesus did. You did. Father Pat?

Again, remember; If I DID think that Father Pat was authorized to do this, I would be making my confession to a Catholic priest right now.

…and I’m not going to do that.

Please read this for what it is, not what it is not. It is a statement of what I believe, not an insult to what you do.

I can go with that dianaiad; You are being honest from your heart.

Some thoughts, my judgments I suppose in what you have written. Try to have it come from the heart and not from my fallen nature. Its obvoiuse when we put those little jabs in here and there. We should all try to avoid that.

Of course I know of all of the good in my Church as well as the bad. (all I have to do is look in the mirror) My biggest sin would be trying to control the outcome of my life daily. I confess this one sin often in sincerity. If I could accomplish this outside the confessional I would be perfect as Adam and Eve were made perfect before they too fell into this sin.

I understand that this is the sin that Jesus came to save me from. My first thought would be why would God take this priesthood that he handed on to the Apostles regarding forgiveness of sins away for even one second? That would be like going to the hospital for chemotherapy only to be turned away with no chance of being healed.

Yes I understand going straight to God for forgiveness. But when we sin we hurt the whole body of Christ as a Church, as a whole. When one member sins the whole body is hurt. So we go to Confession not only for ourselves but for the whole Church. After being a apart of it for 12 years here in Northern Utah I can honestly say Confession is absolutely undeniable hated by Satan. He tries to do everything in his limited power to keep us all out.

Dianaiad: If I thought that Father Pat had the authority to forgive your sins, then I would be Catholic. I absolutely respect that YOU believe this, and your faith is that you are behaving as if your sins have been forgiven, and you have a new chance to "be ye therefore perfect, even as your father in heaven is perfect."

Yes, perfect only through and in Jesus. Take the ten commandments for instance. I know I will break them here and there. You could take adultery for instance. I have been married for many years to the love of my life besides Jesus of course. If I even look at another women with any kind of lust in my heart I have committed adultery. This is a hard one given the state of the word today. I find myself tearing my eyes out often. I do my best because of the love I have for my wife. But this does not make me any better than the worst of them.

Take murder. If I have ever hated someone, maybe anger towards one driving slower in front of me, maybe yelling at my child out of frustration, I then have committed murder. So understanding this I have to look towards Jesus and His Cross. All sin is sin and one small one kills us, and we all do die as a result. This is what I do, since I cannot follow the Ten Commandments I follow them by following Jesus. Through my Confessions He brings me home. He sets me free.

**I believe, as you do, that the priesthood power is authority; the authority to administer sacraments and ordinances in the name of God and have them ‘stick.’ You believe that this priesthood authority resides in the Catholic church. I don’t. **

You bet

Of course, I agree as this is our Sacrament . Who else could do this but God Himself? He allows us to share in it just as He allows us to share in the true Love between the Father and the Son.

Continued …

**Jesus did. You did. Father Pat? **

Its Always Jesus as only God can forgive us our sins. There could be no other way. When I myself forgive another it is only because of Jesus. I accept His forgiveness for others. I can see others as He sees them and in this just as special as me.

**Again, remember; If I DID think that Father Pat was authorized to do this, I would be making my confession to a Catholic priest right now. **…and I’m not going to do that.[/quoteI

Not to be funny here. Actually you would have to go through the RCIA process for at least a year to learn about the Most Holy Trinity. Our special Mother Mary, the Eucharist, Confession, the communion of Saints etc…then after accepting this teaching, you would be Baptised at Easter for the forgiveness of all of your sins, original sin included and you would receive the Holy Spirit within you to confirm all of these things. . Then you would have to wait until you were weighed down by sin such as telling little lies, gossiping, seeking esteem from others , playing god etc… (just some of my own sins) Then you would make your first confession. Not to make you a better human above anyone else, rather to make Jesus bigger in your life so he can make you a better human being from the inside out. Its all about love. So that you can tell others about what He has done for you. Like the women who anointed His feet, kissed His feet while wiping away the tears. We really are “all” that women… man or female. We just have to come to realize our need.

You know what I feel good, I am sure you do as well. That was great!
God Bless

D&C 63:

61 Wherefore, let all men beware how they take my name in their lips—
62 For behold, verily I say, that many there be who are under this condemnation, who use the name of the Lord, and use it in vain, having not authority.
Strange that someone would quote from sources that no one but you believes has any validity at all. The very source of which is constantly in question and seen as rather shady. What can it possibly accomplish? You have every right to believe as you please but quoting from the D&C, the Book of Mormon or the Pearl of Great Price with no proof that any of these are based on anything but the imaginative wanderings of a young man who was looking for a get rich quick scheme, was **always ** looking for a get rich quick scheme, is morally irresponsible. You are doing exactly what you quote say should not be done.

I am sure that father pat is a wonderful priest and confessor. But not all priests are father pat. Let me give you an example. In my neck of the woods priests have not absolved sins because they felt that the person should not be absolved. And so, what happens. The person looks for a more genial priests who isn’t so hardnosed and then after the confession, the sins are absolved. Now I find nothing wrong in that. But…it does send a message. I am no fan of hardnosed priests who don’t absolved sins. The priests of opus dei can be pretty hardnosed and so, I may not choose such a priest. I would rather go to a nice priest who understands human nature. But that also sends a message. See my point?

True enough. 🙂

My purpose here is to explain my beliefs to people, which I presume is also why you are here. My beliefs are derived from the scriptural texts that I believe in, which includes the Book of Mormon and the other volumes you have mentioned; and the best way that I can explain my beliefs is often to quote directly from them—in much the same way that you would quote from the Bible to explain your beliefs. I make no apologies for quoting from my scriptural texts to explain my beliefs any more than, I hope, you would for quoting from the Bible.

Fine…but proving your faith using books no one but you and other Mormons accept is not going to prove or explain anything because it is self-fullfilling. It is like defining a word using the word you are defining in the definition

Are you telling me that my sins I confessed were not forgiven by Jesus because Father Pat has not the authority to help administer this kind of love? When I walked out I felt 100% that my sins were forgiven. . . .
Mormons also have the rite of confession. We believe in going to our bishops and confessing our sins. We also believe that when we repent of our sins, and confess them, they are forgiven. God forgives sinners who confess their sins and repent. And it is through the Atonement of Jesus Christ that we are forgiven. So what is it that you are trying to tell the Mormons here? Are you suggesting that when Mormons confess their sins and repent, that they are not forgiven? Is that what you are trying to say, or is it something else? I am confused.
