Is anyone here involved with the charasimatic Catholic movement? I know absolutely nothing about it. Someone care to enlighten me?

The ones that act and teach fully in communion with Rome should be accepted.

I think it’s wonderful that the Church supports charismatic expression of faith. I grant that it is not for me, but neither is the other end of the spectrum, the very formal Latin Mass.

If you have a Newman Center Church in your area, you should go there one Sunday for a Mass, and there you’ll get a taste of the charismatic movement.

not on your life
I can’t think of any discussion hear likely to lead to more bitterness, misinformation, and uncharity than this one, unless it is headcovering, SAHMs, or communion in the hand. If you are truly interested, go over to the correct forum Spirituality and do a search on past discussions.

Am I missing something?

If a Parish’s actions and teachings are in full communion with the Church, then who are we to judge?

I am a non catholic that has been to many different churches. I don’t know anyone who claims to be Charismatic, but I can tell which ones might fit into that category. The word Charismatic probably derived from the word charsima wich means a person’s personality or charm. This is what people use to decieve people instead of saving them. They just want people to like them or give them money.

Charismatic as used in Catholic Charismatic Renewal refers to the charisms or gifts of the Holy Spirit. These are not the sanctifying gifts which are given to build up our personal holiness, but are given to us for the upbuilding of the Church, as mentioned in. for example, 1 Cor 12.

The Catholic Charismatic Renewal is a worldwide movement within the Catholic Church, although it is strictly speaking not a movement like say Focolare or Cursillo.

A few quotes from the Catechism of the Catholic Church

The Church, a communion living in the faith of the apostles which she transmits, is the place where we know the Holy Spirit:
………
-in the charisms and ministries by which the Church is built up;
(CCC 688)

Communion of charisms… Within the communion of the Church, the Holy Spirit “distributes special graces among the faithful of every rank” for the building up of the Church. Now, “to each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.” (CCC 951)

Charisms
Whether extraordinary or simple and humble, charisms are graces of the Holy Spirit which directly or indirectly benefit the Church, ordered as they are to her building up, to the good of men, and to the needs of the world. (CCC 799)
Charisms are to be accepted with gratitude by the person who receives them and by all members of the Church as well. They are a wonderfully rich grace for the apostolic vitality and for the holiness of the entire Body of Christ, provided they really are genuine gifts of the Holy Spirit and are used in full conformity with authentic promptings of this same Spirit, that is, in keeping with charity, the true measure of all charisms. (CCC 800).
It is in this sense that discernment of charisms is always necessary. No charism is exempt from being referred and submitted to the Church’s shepherds. “Their office (is) not indeed to extinguish the Spirit, but to test all things and hold fast to what is good,” so that all the diverse and complementary charisms work together "for the common good.” (CCC 801)

Thanks for all your replies. In my area there are no “Charasimatic” parishes as such. Some local Hispanics, I think, have some Charasimatic services and meetings (not Mass) but since my Spanish is limited to “cerveza fria, por favor” That’s not really an option for me to check out.

I’m completely ignorant of the Charasimatic movement. If anyone has any personal stories I would like to hear them.

Legal Eagle,

I’ve been to one seminar - and it was about praying in tongue and healing the sick. I could only speak from my own personal experience - my life has been changed after attending the seminar - for the better; however, I am still quite confused about this movement as I’ve seen there are good and there are some misconceptions coming out of this movement.

This Friday, there will be a healing service at a Catholic Church, and I am not so sure if I should attend. Things happening supernaturally is kinda scaring me and confusing me at some points.

If you like me to say more about this, please PM me.

The best things to do: - pray in the language you are comfortable with, read Scriptures, attend daily mass, love one another are things that we must do, etc…

My life has been changed (for the better) by Charismatic Renewal and I know many people whose life has been transformed. But it is true that, as you say there are many misconceptions and misunderstandings.

Healing scary? Jesus healed. Many, many saints healed, raised people from the dead, drove out evil spirits etc. This should be normal. Hopefully if things are explained properly there is nothing scary - unusual perhaps; we have such low expectations of the power of the Holy Spirit.
“The Holy Spirirt is awesome when he acts.” (John Paul II)

These are all good things. But don’t get stuck in a comfort zone. We are called to step out into the deep and grow in our Christian life.

If you get a chance go to Life In The Spirit Seminars. These are usually 7-8 sessions (depends on the format used) that explain and take you through living a life in the Spirit.

We had a Life in the Spirit weekend at my parish a few months ago. We were out of town and didn’t get to attend. I didn’t realize that this was a charasimatic type seminar. Everyone who went to the seminar spent the next several weeks telling everyone else how wonderful it was, but they didn’t mention tounges or healing or anything. Can you give me an idea about the process? If that’s even the right word. Is there a Liturgy? A Mass? What goes on?

Thanks Steve for replying my post.

Healing is not scary - it is a blessing; however, there are few other things that really really concern me. Because I think it is best not to say it out here in my other post because I am not quite sure. But if you don’t mind me discussing with you in the private message, I could send you some of my concerns, and you maybe able to help me explain.

Basically, at this point, I am neither Pro nor Against it. I am trying to open up for understanding.

Thanks!

The way they are done may vary.

We use the course produced back in 1972 (very popular, my booklet says May 1994, 24th printing. Total in print 1,825,000 - and that was over 10 years ago)

This consists of 7 weekly sessions. Each session consists of a talk on a particular topic followed by discussions in small groups. There is also a booklet with scripture quotations to pray on during the week as preparation for the following session.
Sessions are:
God’s love
Salvation
The New Life
Receiving God’s Gift
Baptised in the Holy Spirit
Growth in the Holy Spirit
Transformation In Christ.

We add an initial session as an introduction to explain what it is all about and two extra sessions – Evangelisation and a celebration Mass to finish the course. I would expect that whatever course is used it covers broadly the same topics.

The key is the “Baptism in the Holy Spirit” where a prayer team will pray with each person for the Holy Spirit to fill them afresh, and perhaps for particular gifts.
“But in a few days you will be baptised with the Holy Spirit” – Acts 1:5

Some people don’t like the term Baptism in the Holy Spirit because we received the Holy Spirit at out baptism (with water), which of course is true. So sometimes the phrase “release of the Spirit” is used, but the older term has tended to stick. It is what happened at Pentecost and what St. Peter referred to in the prophecy from Joel - I will pour out my Spirit on all people” (Acts 2)
