The Christian Community Bible; Catholic pastoral edition?

Hi everyone,

I have just purchased The Christian Community Bible; Catholic pastoral edition, last night at a prayer meeting held at my parish, it looked good with easy to use book marks and also commentaries.

Its not until this morning that I have read afew reviews on-line, and they are very mixed :confused: Even that some Bishops don’t approve on this Bible 😦

I confused on what to think, Has anyone here heard of or read or own this Bible?

Is this a good and approved translation?

If anyone has any feed back, it would be really appreciated!

It does have an Imprimatur from the Catholic Bishop’s conference of the Philippines so it should be acceptable by the Catholic Church.

It is easy to read with good foot notes.

I have a couple copies of it, I like it, its not my main translation. Like any translation there are things I like and dislike. It is more dynamic (less literal) than the NAB, but in my opinion less dynamic than the Jerusalem Bible. It uses inclusive language, but is not as heavy handed as the NRSV, it is more like the NJB in that regards. The translation is clear and easy to understand without dumbing down the text. It uses Yahweh for God in the O.T., but uses Lord in the Psalms and the N.T. The Christian Community Bible (CCB) Psalms are not bad, they don’t mess around with them as the NAB does (See Psalm 23, it sounds very much like the RSV-2CE version). One thing I don’t like, is in the O.T. when there are portions of the text that the CCB doesn’t think is as important as other verses, it uses a small font size to save space. The larger print edition has about 11 font size on the N.T., Psalms and the 'important parts of the O.T. (according to the CCB), but they switch to a 9 font size on the less important veses. The notes can be good at times (following Catholic doctrine) and at other times can lean toward ‘liberation theology’ ideas. This Bible was first marketed in Spanish and was geared toward South America and people in other third world countries. This translation is not marketed very much in the USA (apparently they have sold millions in Spanish), But overall I like it.
 
My greatest complaint against the Christian Community Bible is the number of editions it actually runs up to. The latest printings are something like th 38th edition, and that’s because the publishers make some changes to each edition of the text and commentaries. Personally, I wonder if the Bishops Conference of Phillipines actually reviewed and granted the imprimatur to all 38 editions of the Christian Community Bible.

The latest editions of the Christian Community Bible has inclusive language almost as bad as the NRSV. There are plenty of places where the editors changed the third person singular to plural to avoid “he”. All that even though it has a preface that eschews such “inclusive” language. Either someone made the changes unauthorised, or else the editors suffer from some intellectual dishonesty.

Mine is the 35th edition, and the inclusive language is much lighter than the NRSV, and it seems to avoid changing verses into plural to make it inclusive. There may have been more changes in the three editions after mine, I don’t know. One of the most common changes to plural is in Psalm 1: which in the RSV-2CE reads, “Blessed is the man…” almost every translation that is inclusive changes it to plural, the CCB changes it to; “Blessed is the one…” and keeps it singular.
 
There is a digital format of this Bible which can be installed on PCs.
However, I tested it. I searched for the word “Bible” and gives me
“All this is in the Bible, the Testament of the Most High God, the book of the Law which Moses entrusted to us, the inheritance of the congregations of Israel.”

This is ridiculous as the Bible includes the New Testament and Sirach is in the Old Testament where Jesus was not yet born. :confused:

I searched on the Online Version of the Christian Community Bible and it reads:
“All this and no other is the Book of the Covenant of the Most High God, the law that Moses entrusted to us, the inheritance of the congregations of Israel.”
The Book of the Covenant was erroneously translated as “The Bible”.

In this advanced electronic digital age, we should be wary about Bibles online or in digital format as these can be hacked or faked and make us confused all the more. :eek:

High Tech can make our lives easier. But we should always check, better on the printed versions of the Bible if possible.

The CCB is alo available on kindle for those who have one.
 
I several copies. Really nice to read and reference. I don’t use it everyday.
