Canon 855 “parents, sponsors and parish priests are to take care that a name is not given that is foreign to Christian sentiment”

I’m just curious. How do we decide one’s name is foreign to Christian sentiment?
Must we choose from the list of canonized Saints’ names, or can it be not from the list of canonized Saints’ names?

I think names that refer to false gods or names with negative meanings should not be used. Also ‘fashionable’ names (think Apple, Brooklyn, etc.) that people will later think are ridiculous or names that may cause the child to be bullied or made fun of should also be avoided. If a name has a positive meaning but is not a Saints name then I do not think there is anything wrong with that, but obviously naming your child after a Saint and giving them that patron is also wonderful.

If the name has a connotation that associates it with non-Christian religions/dieties, ideals, or anything glamorizing secular celebrity or notorious anti-Christian or anti-Catholic persons.

No, there may be names in your culture that aren’t Saints names but yet are appropriate names, or perhaps they are family names. It’s OK to have those names.

Typically a child has a first and middle name, you could choose a saint name for one of the names but not necessarily both.

😃

Well, one could argue that God created the Moon and therefore…

Is this an example the name we shouldn’t use?
Well, you are probably not familiar with American culture. Frank Zappa is a musician/Hollywood type that gave his kids weird names like Moon Unit and Dweezil.

So, if the purpose was to name them something **weird **then no. If Moon or something like that has cultural significance for you then it might be appropriate. In Western culture something like Moon would be associated with New Age or Pagan religions, so I would stay away from it. I don’t know about Malaysia.

Like for example, the name Melissa is derived from the the Greek and Latin for honeybee. So, names do have meanings.

You wouldn’t want names that mean something bad, vulgar, evil, or pagan.

Do you have some specific name in mind? I’m not really sure what your concern is.

Nah nothing that I am concerning about. Just curious after reading that from CCC online.
