Do we know exactly when the Church was founded? Was it when Jesus gave St. Peter the Keys to the Kingdom of Heaven? Thanks.

The Church was founded at Pentecost, in Acts Chapter 2. Peter receives the Keys in Matthew 16:

13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14 And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus answered him, **“Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. 18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. **19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” 20 Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.

The “Founding”; LIKE salvation itself is [was] a process, that begin with , granting them some Godly Powers [Mt 10:1-8], solidified with ALL of the Key’s to heavens single gate being given to Peter, and culminated with the 1st Pentecost.

Mt 10:1-5
And having called his twelve disciples together, he gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of diseases, and all manner of infirmities. [2] And the names of the twelve apostles are these: The first, Simon who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, [3] James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew the publican, and James the son of Alpheus, and Thaddeus, [4] Simon the Cananean, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him. [5] These twelve Jesus sent: commanding them, saying: Go ye not into the way of the Gentiles, and into the city of the Samaritans enter ye not.

Mt 16: 18-19
And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, [SINGULAR] and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. [19] And I will give to YOU [all of] the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever YOU shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever YOU shalt loose upon earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven.

Confirmed in John 17: 17-20
Sanctify them in truth. Thy word is truth. [18] As thou hast sent me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. The Church was born physically when the Holy Spirit descended. Luke’s version is Pentecost. John’s version is Jesus breathing on the disciples.

The removal of the old authority - “Chair of Moses” - took place in 70AD with the destruction of Jerusalem and the end of the Temple priesthood and animal sacrifice.

To my knowledge, Yes when Jesus changes the name of Simon to Peter and hands him the keys and says Petra is the rock of which he builds His Church on. That’s the physical establishment of His physical Church and of final supreme Papal authority to bind and loose.

Jesus would have used the Aramaic word Kefa/Cepha, yet He still referred to him as Simon. Simon had been appointed as head of the apostles, It wasn’t until after Pentecost that Peter/Cepha was “installed” and took charge of the Church.

BTW, I also came across a reference that the difference in Peter and Petra is only in Classical Greek, not in the everyday language the common people would have spoken back then.

This is a most interesting question; and part of it depends on how one defines the term “founded”, and “Church”.

Early on in His ministry, Christ sent out disciples telling them to heal (and thus granting them authority and power to heal in His name), cf. Luke 10, 9: “Heal the sick who are there and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’”.

Clearly, others are not only speaking in His name, but also healing…

Which is not to disagree with any of the previous posters; but it was a process over time. It is a bit like trying to ask when the Apostles were “ordained” (as there was no specific point I can recall; some put it at the Last Supper, when He instituted the Eucharist; but then, it was after the Resurretion that He gave them the power and command to forgive sins; and not until after the Ascension when they received the fullness of the Holy Spirit.

And never was there a specific notation of their being baptized…

Interesting info on Petra, Kefa, Cepha. Whichever language it is all articulate, in their own way, the same reality of the name change to the today’s known English translation from Simon to Peter (Rock).

One point of interest though that I will point to, is when Jesus declares him a rock because it is a name change to a foundational signifigance/structure and the other is the handing of the Full Authoritative keys and authority of binding and loosing between Heaven and Earth. And also when Jesus states that the gates of the netherworld will not prevail against it. Signifying the rock and foundation shall not be swayed or defeated but will stand right to the end. This is why all we need to do to find the original Church is simply look to the big rock that can never be removed. The foundation God placed cannot be moved by man. To me this seems this is the physical establishment because our Lord is laying down his foundation in Matthew 16:16-9

16 Simon Peter said in reply, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”17Jesus said to him in reply, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and bloodhas not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father.18And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.19*I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

Christ did many things in creating His Church before this event so His Church came from the Heavens so to speak and fell upon Peter the foundation. Christ built His own Church and placed the foundation there afterwards.

From top to bottom it was built instead of us humans from bottom to top. From the sky to earth instead of earth to sky. <---- That’s what came to me so I thought it be best to write it down.

Also at which point Peter do you mean Peter was “installed” and at which point are you referring to where Peter “took” charge of the Church.

There are many things that happen after this but, the root I think many are trying to expose is at which point did the physical establishment take place? I believe Matthew 16:16-19 illustrates the truth of when the physical establishment occurred.
