The Church in Southern Manitoba

I was wondering if anyone knows anything about the history of the Church in Southern Manitoba? I couldn’t help noticing a very odd ecclesiastical situation. Immediately next to each other, you have the Archdiocese of Winnipeg, which is not a Metropolitan see and floats alone outside of the typical ecclesiastical provincial structure…and the Archdiocese of St. Boniface which is a metropolitan see, but presiding over a province consisting only of itself (no suffragan dioceses). Just seems very odd.
