Two issues mentioned in the op reference, There’s a big problem with the Pope’s language skills. He is required to use seven languages But the current Pope knows one or two. He relies on translators for the rest. When anyone misquotes him in a different language, he has no way of knowing. During his time as Pope, he has been misquoted excessively.

So, people get a radical image of the Pope being in conflict to even things he has no control over changing. Ne’er-do-wells in the Vatican and the media have an agenda to undermine the Church. It is they who are at fault for purveying deceit about the Pope’s stance on issues.

Is this true? Is there a source for this “requirement”?

An asset, yes! But a requirement? Really?

IF the Pope is “required” to know seven langauges, then how on earth did Pope Francis ever get elected?! I can see a few bishops disregarding a “requirement” (?) to know seven langauges, but a majority of them ignoring it? That doesn’t make sense to me.

No. Pope John Paul II was a multilingual.

Other popes before him were perhaps bilingual and then knew Ecclesiastical Latin.
